The tragedy in Montreal is a wake-up call we can’t ignore. Radicalization and hate don’t just appear out of nowhere.

They grow quietly in the background, unchecked, often starting when misinformation meets isolation.

The thing is, we have a tool that actually works: education. Real education that builds critical thinking, media literacy, and genuine empathy.

These aren’t just nice-to-have programs. They’re literally prevention. When we teach young people to question narratives, to think for themselves, and to actually connect with people different from them, we interrupt the cycle.
We can’t stop every tragedy.

But we can absolutely interrupt the pipeline that leads there.

That requires investment, prioritization, and a commitment to making this education accessible to everyone.

Auschwitz was the only place in the entire N**i concentration camp system where prisoners were tattooed with identification numbers, and even that dehumanizing act was reserved only for those deemed useful enough to work.

Those sent directly to the gas chambers upon arrival were never registered, never assigned a number, never recorded in any ledger. They were processed and erased in the same breath.

There is a grim irony in this: the prisoners who were tattooed had their humanity stripped down to a number burned into their skin, no longer a person with a name, a family, a history, but a unit of labor to be tracked and consumed.

And yet those who were murdered immediately were denied even that cold, bureaucratic acknowledgment of their existence.

The N**is reduced people to numbers. Then they couldn’t even be bothered to number everyone they killed.
This is why the true death toll at Auschwitz can never be fully known.

Over a million people, mothers, children, elderly men, infants, passed through and vanished without a single digit assigned to them, without a trace left in any record. They were not counted because they were never considered worth counting.

In just 56 days during the summer of 1944, over 437,000 Hungarian Jews were deported to Auschwitz, an average of 7,800 people per day.

It was the single largest and fastest mass deportation of the entire Holocaust, carried out in the final year of the war as Allied forces were already closing in.

Many of those who arrived never made it past the selection platform. Yet amid unimaginable horror, survivors held onto their humanity, their memories, and their will to bear witness.
