How Brunson Became the MVP — Most Valuable Pooch 🏀🐶

In May 2025, six emaciated dogs were surrendered to Animal Care Centers of NYC (ACC). Given their condition and the fact that all the dogs showed signs of neglect, they were then transferred to the ASPCA Animal Recovery Center for further care and treatment.

Upon intake, the dogs needed names and we sought inspiration from members of the New York Knicks. One-year-old Brunson was the sickest of the group, emaciated with overgrown nails, a dirty coat and needed treatment for a myriad of other issues. His health was so fragile that Brunson spent five days in the intensive care unit, receiving various medical interventions to help build up his strength again.

By July, Brunson had made a full recovery and was ready to find a home of his own. Before that, though, our boy was honored to march as one of the canine Parade Grand Marshals at the 2025 Tompkins Square Halloween New York Dog Parade. Dressed, of course, as a basketball in honor of his namesake, Jalen Brunson, he had a blast strutting the streets and making new friends. It wasn't long after that he caught the eye of someone special.

Lindsay G. originally came to the ASPCA Adoption Center in search of a puppy. When she locked eyes with Brunson, she knew he was the dog for her. He immediately melted into her when she reached down to pet him, and the rest is history. Lindsay and Brunson are now two peas in a pod, with many cuddle sessions in their future.

🚨BREAKING: the ASPCA Assists with Suspected Dogfighting Case🚨

This week, the ASPCA helped with the removal and transport of dogs from a suspected dogfighting case in Greenville County, South Carolina.

Upon arrival on scene, law enforcement discovered dogfighting paraphernalia, including weighted collars, heavy chains and a treadmill. Some dogs were also observed with wounds and dehydration. Our teams are assisting with evidence collection, legal and investigative assistance, and forensic exams to help pursue justice for these animals.

As the dogs (now in our care) receive critical veterinary and behavior exams, support from generous donors is urgent. Please rush a gift today to help us care for these animals and so many more.

‼️SUSPECTED DOGFIGHTING CASE‼️
At the request of the Greenville County Sheriff's Office, the ASPCA is assisting with a suspected dogfighting case involving 10 dogs, including one puppy, who were removed from a South Carolina property.
Suspected dogfighting paraphernalia like weighted collars, heavy chains and a treadmill were discovered by law enforcement. The ASPCA is supporting the transport of the dogs to an ASPCA recovery facility and assisting with evidence collection, forensic exams and legal and investigative support.

Thank you, Animal Rescue League of Iowa and Congressman Zach Nunn for bringing Goldie's Act to the forefront of this important conversation. For too long, horrific treatment at USDA-licensed puppy mills has been ignored, and we appreciate Secretary Brooke Rollins recognizing the need for changes to protect dogs in these facilities.

U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke L. Rollins appeared in Iowa this week to tout the agency’s efforts to shut down puppy mills.

The quirkier the pup, the better! One man's soft spot for pups with special needs 🧡

At Evan's house, every dog has a story. His first dog, Luna, arrived as a stray puppy and quickly moved in. Bert came after, recovering from serious injuries when Evan adopted him from a local shelter. It was his soft spot for dogs with special needs that led him to two ASPCA dogs, Gizmo and Eddie.

Evan and his wife had been thinking about adopting a small dog when they came across Gizmo on the ASPCA website. The scruffy pup seemed like exactly the kind of laid-back companion they were looking for, and it didn't take long for him to become part of the family. His mitral valve disease, a heart condition that requires daily medication, might have deterred some, but for Evan, it made Gizmo all that much of a perfect match.

After Gizmo, Evan wasn't actively looking for another dog until he saw Eddie's adoption profile online. Originally having come to the ASPCA Cruelty Recovery Center in Ohio with 34 other dogs as part of a suspected neglect case, it became clear that Eddie was not only hard of hearing, but also had a malformed and nonvisual eye, which was ultimately removed. Already drawn to overlooked animals, Evan noticed Eddie right away and decided to foster him. After about a week, it was clear that Eddie wasn't going anywhere, and he became the newest member of the pack!
