Kenya Education Fund We help children reach their full potential by providing full scholarships for high school and the first year of university NKCEF merged with KEF in 2011.

The story of KEF weaves together the rich histories of three organizations: the Kenya Education Fund (established in 2006), the Nomadic Kenyan Children’s Educational Fund (NKCEF, established in 2001), and the Children of Kibera Foundation (established in 2007). KEF has over 20 years of collective experience working to promote education in Kenya. KEF was started by Bradley Broder, a former Peace Corps Volunteer, and Dominic Muasya, a local community leader, to keep kids in high school when their means did not allow it. NKCEF was formed after a group of families from McLean, Virginia, accompanied their children’s high school teacher, Hon. Joseph Lekuton, on a trip to his nomadic homeland in Northern Kenya, where many of the children were not in school. The Children of Kibera Foundation was founded by the Honorable Ken Okoth (Kibera) and provides hundreds of educational scholarships to primary, secondary, and university students from Kibera, Africa’s largest slum. CoKF merged with KEF in 2013. Visit www.kenyaeducationfund.org to learn more.

Today is DAF Day, the national giving day for donor-advised funds, the fastest-growing form of philanthropy in the country!

For 25 years, KEF has opened doors through education. Today, your DAF gift can open the next door for a young person in Kenya.

Why consider giving through a DAF?
✅ Potential tax deduction: Contributions to your DAF may qualify for an income tax deduction in the year you contribute, subject to applicable rules and limits.
✅ Potential tax-free growth: Funds invested within your DAF can grow tax-free, potentially increasing what you have available to give.
✅ Flexible contributions: Depending on your DAF provider, you may contribute cash, stocks, cryptocurrency, or real estate.

KEF welcomes DAF gifts as a flexible way for donors to support our mission, helping sustain scholarships and student programs and plan for the future.

25 Years of KEF. 4,600+ lives impacted. One shared commitment to education.
To celebrate 25 years of Kenya Education Fund, we gathered friends of KEF at The Langley School in Washington, D.C., for a special celebration of our journey.
It was a beautiful opportunity to reflect on KEF’s rich history and honor the many people who have made our work possible, our scholars, families, donors, partners, volunteers, teachers, alumni, and friends.
Together, we have helped more than 4,600 students access quality education and build brighter futures.
To everyone who joined us, supported us, donated, shared our story, opened doors, and believed in the power of education thank you. Your support has been an essential part of this journey.

And as we celebrate 25 years, we’re not only looking back. We’re looking ahead to the students we have yet to reach, the dreams we have yet to support, and the future we are building together.
Here’s to 25 years of impact, and to the next chapter of changing lives through education.

25 YEARS OF IMPACT | DID YOU KNOW?

Did you know that KEF alumni continue to support scholarships and KEF programs long after graduating? For 25 years, KEF has invested in students not just through education, but by nurturing a culture of giving back and serving others.

Every year, our alumni return to support KEF’s student mentorship workshops, making them our primary source of volunteers, mentors and facilitators. Their experiences help guide and inspire the next generation of KEF scholars.

During student intake, alumni also give back by supporting scholarships and providing essential learning materials, including geometry sets and other school supplies, to students beginning their educational journey.

Their guiding principle is simple: “To whom much is given, much is expected.”

We are proud that community service remains at the heart of KEF, and even prouder that this culture continues to live on through our alumni.

From scholars to mentors. From beneficiaries to benefactors.
The KEF legacy continues.

Building Skills. Creating Employment. Transforming Futures.

Today, we welcomed our first cohort of students into the KEF Vocational & Technical Pathways Programme, in partnership with Thika Technical Training Institute.

The onboarding marked the beginning of a new journey one focused on practical skills, confidence, career opportunities and financial independence.

Our students will train in areas including construction, electrical work and solar technology, gaining practical, industry-relevant skills that can open doors to employment, apprenticeships and self-employment.

At KEF, we believe there is more than one pathway to a successful future. Every young person deserves the opportunity to discover their strengths, develop their skills and build a career they can be proud of.

Today was just the beginning.

Did you know that for 25 years, Kenya Education Fund (KEF) has helped educate over 4,600 young Kenyans?

That’s 4,600 lives directly impacted through access to education, opportunity, and a chance to build a brighter future.
But the impact doesn’t stop with the students.
If each student is part of a family of approximately five people, KEF’s work has indirectly touched the lives of more than 23,000 people across families and communities in Kenya.

4,600 students.
23,000+ family members.
25 years of changing lives through education.

And this is just the beginning.

KEF Second-Year University Students came together in Nairobi for our pilot Alumni Engagement Forum! Over two days, our students had the opportunity to learn, connect, and look beyond the classroom through conversations on financial literacy, mental health, personal branding, entrepreneurship, university mentorship, and navigating “black tax.”

A huge thank you to the KEF alumni, professionals, mentors, and facilitators who generously shared their time, experiences, and wisdom with our students.
This forum was a reminder of the power of community and mentorship. By connecting our students with those who have walked the journey before them, we are helping them prepare not just for graduation but for the opportunities, responsibilities, and realities that come after university.

Here’s to learning, growing, building connections, and creating opportunities beyond the classroom!

A great conversation to kick off the back-to-school week!

Today, our Country Director joined Y254 for an engaging conversation on the changing world of education, career opportunities, and how we can better prepare young people for the future.

From nurturing students’ interests early and exploring the many diverse career pathways available, to the role of Human-Centered Design in schools and the opportunities created through CBE, the conversation highlighted the importance of preparing learners for life beyond the classroom.

We also explored the gaps that still need attention from access to internships and stronger partnerships with companies, to essential employability skills such as CV writing and negotiation.

At KEF, our support goes beyond scholarships. We work directly with students and schools to help young people explore their potential, develop relevant skills, and access opportunities that can shape their futures. And with over 70% of our team being KEF alumni, we are incredibly proud to see the impact come full circle.
