Liddy was our friend. She was our roommate. She was our caregiver. Our leader. Our advocate. Our writer & truth teller. Our cat-loving, Brandi Carlile, Joni Mitchell, Evermore-obsessed Liggy. Our Chitty-chitty-bang-bang and gettin’ knitty with Liddy. A “laaaady” who made us all feel better with her hugs, her sing-song words of comfort, her softness, her strength, her laugh and funny-ness, her tears, and her squawk that could be heard through the house. She was this and so much more to us… She was this and so much more to so. many. people.

If you were here, Liddy, you’d know exactly what to say. You’d write a balm for our souls. You’d hold our hand gently, guide us toward something bigger than ourselves.

Clarissa Pinkola Estes told us once, “One of the most calming and powerful actions you can do to intervene in a stormy world is to stand up and show your soul…Struggling souls catch light from other souls who are fully lit and willing to show it.”

Thank you, Liddy, for showing this world your soul.

Liddy is our friend. She is our caregiver. Our advocate. Our writer & truth teller. We love you so much, Liddy. We love each of you, Grantlands, and “the boy.” ❤️ You are forever a part of our community.
Rest in peace, dear friend.

This spring, for our Heart of L'Arche fundraiser, we had the gift of collaborating with Ben Sollee for the program. It was such a treat to have his music, heart, and care helping us share who we are with donors and friends.

"If I’m being honest, I didn’t realize the importance of speaking at the UN until the morning of. We’ve gotten several opportunities to share On Loneliness in different settings. I’ve watched our little film enough times to get the song stuck on repeat in my head. So in some ways, it felt like just another opportunity to share with folks.

Then, the Monday morning of World Down Syndrome Day 2026, as I was supporting Ricky in adjusting his tie and listening to him scold me about needing to eat more breakfast from the uninspiring spread at the hotel, the texts started coming in from friends and family wishing us all the best, sharing their excitement. After passing through UN security on that rainy morning as we were trying (and perhaps failing) to make it to the Trusteeship Council Chamber on time, I flashed back to everything I knew about that building. I studied International and Global Studies in college and felt as though I had been in those rooms before because of all of the pictures and stories I had learned about the collective striving towards peace within those walls. We scurried to our seats in the front with our names lit up on the placards, and I looked down the panel at people sitting alongside us, people seen by the world as people in seats of power as ambassadors to the UN, and there we were alongside them.

And there was Ricky, so ready and willing to share a piece of his story and wisdom with the world, and delighting in his face being on the big screen for the world to see.

And then there were all the people who shared with us how much they saw themselves and their loved ones reflected in the film.

And then there was the infectious feeling of hope that moved around the room, not denying the pain and rampant breaking down of peace in this world, but looking at it head-on and saying we are still here, together."

Mulu would never brag about herself, so we have to do it for her ❤️ In April, Mulu received the VA DSP of the Year award from ANCOR American Network of Community Options and Resources, a nationwide group of service providers for people with disabilities. She and her daughter flew to Boston for the ceremony, with colleague Odile, who was joining the conference as part of the leadership program.

Mulu has worked as the awake overnight assistant at Highland House for 18 years! She has poured herself into this home and community—faithfully caring for core members and assistants, attending to so many details in the home, preparing home-made meals for everyone, and generally making sure all of us are doing ok.

Mulu knows the right mop required for the job, the exact way Hazel likes her morning drink, and the perfect moment to offer a hug. She can whip out her German at a moment’s notice to help our German volunteers feel more comfortable (yes, Mulu has her doctorate from Germany 😏) and there is no one who comes close to making lentils as delicious as her.

Through so many years and iterations of Highland House, Mulu has been a faithful constant alongside core members. We are so grateful for your steady presence, wisdom, kindness, mothering, generosity, talent, and expertise.

We love you, Mulu!! Congratulations!
