The tents were never built for this heat.

Two years into the crisis, more than 1.9 million people in Gaza are still displaced—and after months of soaring temperatures, the shelters they're living in have become almost unlivable. For the women and girls inside, that inescapable heat only worsens everything else they're already carrying.

But aid workers continue, no matter what. Dr. Ambereen Sleemi is one of the voices in our newest story. So is Mahmoud, a logistics officer delivering Mama Kits across Gaza. The people keeping care going are, more and more, living the same crisis as the people they serve.

Meet Mahmoud: A Logistics Officer in Deir al-Balah from Gaza. Since the war began, his home has been bombed, and he’s been displaced—just like more than a million others in Gaza.

That’s what makes the Mama Kits he delivers so crucial. Each one carries what a family can’t find in Gaza right now: diapers, postpartum pads, baby clothes, blankets, soap, and more—the everyday essentials that help a new mother stay cared for and keep her newborn safe through the first fragile weeks.

This is what community caring for its own looks like: neighbors reaching neighbors, no matter what.

In rural Sudan, Hager has spent almost 30 years welcoming babies into the world and watching them grow into mothers who now come to her themselves.

With millions displaced by war, her work matters more than ever. From a small clinic in her home, she welcomes any woman who arrives at her door: women in labor, survivors of violence, or displaced by war.

She doesn't just deliver babies. She teaches women about family planning and violence against women, connects them to work, and cares for their children so they can earn a living.

Part two: Meet Loaa, a student in Gaza with a dream of opening her own cafe.

Displacement pulled that world apart. For a while, she withdrew completely. She didn’t want to leave her tent or see anyone.

Then, a teacher invited her to a UNFPA youth center.

While there, Loaa was selected to help lead a creative-writing initiative for children—a space where girls could turn what they were carrying into stories.

“We wrote together, we laughed together. We taught them, and they taught me.”

Now, Loaa says she wants more—to go out, to give, and to build something again.

Rates of violence against women and girls in Haiti have skyrocketed—thousands of new cases were reported in just the first six months of 2026. Most of the violence has been carried out by armed gangs, who are using sexual violence to punish and control the communities they’ve taken over.

Girls aged 12-17 are being disproportionately targeted.

These are not figures from a faraway crisis. They are women and girls, each one a person who deserves to be safe and healthy. None of whom should be reduced to a number.

Imagine walking into work every day not knowing if the building will still be standing by the end of it. For midwives, nurses, and doctors in Gaza, that's their daily reality.

The past three years have been the deadliest on record for humanitarian workers. In Gaza and the West Bank alone, more than 560 humanitarians were killed. And still, they show up delivering a new life, because someone must be there when the baby arrives.

Olena Tarasenko, a driver with a UNFPA mobile team in Kherson, , delivered mental health support to women and girls living through war. She died on July 4, 2026, from injuries sustained in shelling near her home.

She was one of the people who showed up day after day to the places most are trying to leave.

World Humanitarian Day, August 19th, recognizes people like Olena—those who deliver care in the world’s most dangerous places.

More than 1,000 aid workers have been killed worldwide in the past three years, the deadliest stretch on record. 25 of those deaths were in Ukraine.
