The World Cup has always been more than a game.

As the world watched the 1978 FIFA World Cup in Argentina, celebration and repression ran side by side under military rule.

While the authorities projected national triumph, thousands were forcibly disappeared and silenced.

Protests challenged the tournament, exposing the political theatre of sport against a backdrop of human rights abuse.

Under the World Cup’s global spotlight, the game is not the only thing we’re watching.

🚨The recent images of Dr. Hussam Abu Safyia are shocking evidence of Israel's abuse against Palestinian detainees. Dr. Abu Safyia has been arbitrarily detained for one and a half years without charges, while being physically abused and denied healthcare. His recent solitary confinement adds a further layer of concerns over his deteriorating health. Dr. Abu Safyia must be immediately and unconditionally released. Israel must release all Palestinians arbitrarily detained. States must pressure Israel to stop abusing Palestinian prisoners.

While Pride is often perceived as a celebration, it originally began as a riot against police brutality at the Stonewall Inn in New York City.

On 28 June 1969, the Stonewall Inn was raided by the police, as it had been on many occasions before, due to laws which required a ‘man’ or a ‘woman’ to be wearing clothing items which ‘matched’ their gender on their state-issued ID. As the LGBTI community in the Stonewall Inn, primarily led by trans women of colour, fought back, police brutality increased amid six days of riots which was a galvanizing force for LGBTI activism in the USA.

In many states around the world, Pride is still centrally and most importantly a protest which highlights, commemorates, and fights for the rights of LGBTI people.

No matter who you are, love is a human right.

Tonight, the U.S. kicks off its 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign on home soil with Paraguay vs the USA. But the game goes beyond what happens on the pitch.

When it comes to human rights, the governments of every nation still have work to do to. As the 2026 World Cup gets underway, we're calling on the governments of host and participating countries to show that respect for human rights is part of the game, too.

Because when the ball starts rolling, humanity must win.

As the men's World Cup kicks off, thousands of fans from around the world risk being shut out of one of the biggest sporting events on the planet.

Instead of cheering from the stands, many are facing travel bans, visa denials, and threats of aggressive immigration enforcement from the US.

With several participating countries subject to a US travel ban, and ongoing racial profiling and arbitrary arrests by ICE and other federal agencies, the country’s Draconian immigration policies threaten to spill over into an event that is meant to bring people together - not tear us apart.

The World Cup belongs to us all. There is no World Cup without the world.
