This report should serve as a reminder that the public must never simply take the government’s word when officials deny that human rights violations are occurring.

With approximately 65,000 people needlessly detained on any given day in the U.S. in numerous facilities, we must demand that the Trump administration ends the cruelty and protects the human rights of our immigrant neighbors, friends and family.

As we mark Indigenous Peoples’ Day, we celebrate the cultures, contributions and resilience of Indigenous communities across the United States.

Indigenous Peoples’ Day also serves as a critical day of reckoning – a recognition of the forced displacement of Indigenous Peoples from their land. As we confront the atrocities of settler colonialism and the injustices committed by European/U.S. colonizers, we must also work towards ending the systemic violence that Indigenous women continue to face today.

Today is World Day Against the Death Penalty. Amnesty International opposes the death penalty in every case, without exception. It violates the right to life and the right to live free from torture or cruel, inhuman or degrading punishment.

California has gone nearly two decades without an ex*****on. Yet more than 550 people there are still under sentence of death, over a quarter of all death sentences in the U.S.

Governor Newsom has said: “My ultimate goal is to end the death penalty in California.” He leaves office in January 2027. It’s time for him to act.

Governor Gavin Newsom has the power to directly grant clemency for about 40% of those with death sentences in California. He can ask the state Supreme Court to recommend commuting the death sentences for the others.
