🔍 The Learning Lens

Color Creates Mood

Color is one of the most powerful storytelling tools available to photographers.

Long before viewers focus on the subject of an image, they often respond emotionally to its colors.

💙 Blue can evoke calm, trust, reflection, and peace.

❤️ Red often communicates energy, passion, strength, and excitement.

💚 Green suggests growth, balance, nature, and renewal.

💛 Yellow brings feelings of warmth, optimism, joy, and creativity.

As you work on this week's Monochromatic Challenge, think about how your chosen color influences the mood of your photograph and the story you want to tell.

Photography isn't just about what we see—it's about how images make us feel.

What color are you most drawn to when creating photographs?

Week 21: Monochromatic

This week's challenge is all about exploring the power of a single color.

A monochromatic image is dominated by shades, tones, and variations of one color family. By limiting your palette, you can create mood, harmony, and visual impact in unexpected ways.

💙 Blues
💚 Greens
❤️ Reds
💛 Yellows

Look for inspiration in nature, architecture, street scenes, fashion, food, or everyday objects around you.

📷 Challenge: Create an image dominated by a single color family (not black and white).

✨ Open to photographers of all skill levels.

We can't wait to see how you interpret this week's theme. Share your image in the comments and tell us why you chose that color.

🔍 Welcome to The Learning Lens — a new weekly PWP series designed to explore photography one concept at a time.

Photography is more than pressing a shutter button. It’s learning to see differently, understanding light, experimenting with technique, and discovering the stories unfolding around us.

Whether you're just picking up your first camera, shooting with your smartphone, or have years of experience behind the lens, this space is for everyone. We'll break down photography concepts into simple, approachable lessons that help us all grow together.

For our very first Learning Lens, we're starting with something you use every day — your eyes.

👁️ Your Pupil: Nature's Aperture

Because before there was a camera, there was light.

Observe. Learn. Create.

A quick reminder before we begin: this challenge is open to everyone — PWP members and non-members, beginners and experienced photographers, DSLR users, mirrorless shooters, and smartphone photographers alike.

There is no perfect interpretation and no single "right" answer. This challenge is about exploring creativity, practicing your skills, and seeing the world through your own perspective.

This week, we're celebrating Joy ✨

Look for authentic moments — laughter, connection, happiness, and the expressions that happen naturally when people forget the camera is there.

PWP 52-Week Photo Challenge: Week 8 - "Chaos"! 🌪️📸

Welcome back to another week of the PWP 52-Week Challenge! As always, this challenge is open to absolutely everyone—members, non-members, seasoned pros, and beginners alike. We want to see the world through your unique lens!

This week, we are continuing our May theme of Life in Motion with subject: Chaos.

Chaos is all around us, and it makes for incredibly dynamic photography. It can be a bustling crowded market, a traffic jam blurring by, or even the beautifully messy reality of our own spaces. For my take this week, I'll likely be capturing my desk—a true scene of chaos right now with a tangle of networking cables, travel itineraries, and my cats, Kenya and Tarzan, deciding that right in the middle of it all is the absolute perfect place for a nap!

Your turn! Embrace the mess and the movement. Grab whatever camera or smartphone you have and show us your interpretation of chaos.

What does chaos look like in your world today? Drop your photos in the comments below! 👇

Hey everyone! I know I am running a little behind on posting this week’s prompt—life happens! But we are keeping the momentum going, and it is never too late to jump in.

As always, a quick reminder: whether you are a proud PWP member or a non-member, a seasoned professional, or a beginner just figuring out your settings, this challenge is open to EVERYONE! We want to see your unique perspective.

Following our May timeline, our theme for Week 7 (Prompt #18) is: Street Candid.

The goal this week is to capture a stranger (respectfully, of course!) or an unguarded, authentic moment in public. No posing, no "smile for the camera"—just real life unfolding naturally.

For my take, I am planning to bring my 35mm lens along during my early morning walks through Flushing Meadows Corona Park. There is such a specific, quiet energy between 5:30 and 7:30 AM. Whether it is someone walking their dog or just someone lost in thought on a bench, I want to capture that morning vibe. The 35mm is a classic street photography lens because it's unobtrusive but still lets you capture the whole scene. Now let's hope someone is there - it would be just my luck to say that and no one is there! LOL.

You don't need to go to a park, though! You can shoot on your daily commute, outside your favorite coffee shop, or right in your own neighborhood. Use your DSLR, your mirrorless, or your smartphone.

What unguarded moments are you capturing this week? Drop your candid shots in the comments below! Let's see the world through your eyes! 👇

📸 PWP 52-Week Photo Challenge: Week 6 - "Motion Blur"! 📸

Calling all creatives! 🌟 Whether you are a proud PWP member or a non-member, a seasoned professional, or a beginner just figuring out your camera settings—this 52-Week Challenge is absolutely open to EVERYONE. We want to see the world through your lens!

We are jumping into our May themes, which means for Week 6 we are taking on prompt Motion Blur. The goal this week is to slow down that shutter speed to show movement.

For my take on this, I wanted to avoid the cookie-cutter shots of passing cars or running water. Between my recent cybersecurity labs and just getting a new Raspberry Pi 5, I decided to make my new tech the subject! Since a circuit board doesn’t move on its own, I am pushing myself to get creative. I’m putting my 18-55mm lens on my Nikon D7500 and doing a "zoom burst"—zooming the lens in and out while using a slow shutter speed to give this static little box a crazy, dynamic sense of motion.

Grab whatever camera or smartphone you have, lower that shutter speed, interpret this week's theme your way, and share it with us.

What in-motion subject are you capturing this week? Drop your photos in the comments below! Let's get snapping! 👇
