💙 How well does Sheila know our Scholars?

At the Gotham Getaway, we put Sheila to the test! Scholars took turns saying, “Hi, Sheila,” while she tried to identify each of them by voice alone. 👀😂

It was a lot of laughs, but it also captured something we love about Gotham Scholars: relationships matter here.

When you spend years learning, growing, being challenged, and showing up together, you really get to know one another. The Gotham Getaway gave us time to strengthen those connections and have plenty of fun along the way. 💙

📚 At Gotham Scholars, learning goes beyond memorization, it’s about making connections.

In our College Seminar, Scholars explore real-world issues through an interdisciplinary lens, connecting literature to history, psychology, sociology, philosophy, science, art, and more. Through thoughtful discussion, research-based inquiry, and deep analysis of texts, current events, and studies, students learn to think critically and develop strong, evidence-based arguments.

Each week, our Scholars engage in meaningful conversations, challenge their perspectives, and deepen their understanding of the world around them. Because preparing for college isn't just about academic readiness, it's about becoming a curious, informed, and engaged thinker. 💙

📚🎭 From the page to the stage!

After reading The Great Gatsby in their Literacy Analysis class, our Scholars experienced the story in a new way with a trip to the Broadway Theatre to see the musical.

Connecting literature with live performance helps bring themes, characters, and history to life, making learning both memorable and meaningful. 💙

💙 It takes a community to create opportunity.

We're grateful for champions like Betty Velasco Galván, who has supported Gotham Scholars not only as an Advisory Board member, but as a connector, advocate, and believer in the power of access.

Through opening the doors of The Co-Co, sharing her expertise, and helping amplify our mission, Betty has helped create spaces where Scholars can learn, connect, and grow.

One of the things we love most about Gotham Scholars is that our students are surrounded by people who invest in them–not because they have to, but because they believe in their potential.

Thank you, Betty, for being part of our village and for helping ensure that more students have access to the opportunities, guidance, and support they deserve. ✨

💙 Thank You, Sara.

Recently, Gotham Scholars said goodbye to one of our original and most beloved teachers, Sara Boeck Batista.

For years, Sara has been so much more than an educator. She has been a mentor, a trusted guide, and a steady source of encouragement for countless Scholars. Her kindness, dedication, and unwavering belief in our students have helped shape not only their academic journeys, but also their confidence and sense of possibility.

Saying goodbye has been especially difficult for the many students whose lives she has touched, but her impact will continue to be felt throughout the Gotham Scholars community for years to come.

Sara, thank you for the care, compassion, and heart you brought to every class and every student. You have helped build the foundation of Gotham Scholars, and we are forever grateful. We will miss you dearly and wish you nothing but the very best in your next chapter. 💙
