ALBANY — Millions of dollars are headed to the victims of a cryptocurrency pyramid scheme that targeted Haitian and other immigrant communities.
The settlement stems from a 2024 lawsuit the state attorney general’s office filed against cryptocurrency trading company NovaTech and cryptocurrency mining company AWS Mining. The companies targeted immigrant communities, particularly Haitian New Yorkers, in prayer groups and through social media and WhatsApp group chats with fraudulent promises of high returns on investments, while running illegal pyramid schemes, according to a release from the attorney general’s office.

More than 11,000 New Yorkers lost millions to scammers who took advantage of immigrant communities, the attorney general said.

Sunday's ambush and apparent abduction of members of a new international police support force underscore the relentless gang violence that has forced yet another postponement of Haiti's desperately needed elections — and the potentially deadly risks Haitian deportees face.
