Architalx is a non-profit volunteer organization established in 1987 for the purpose of providing educational programs in the field of architecture and design to Greater Portland and Maine. The mission of Architalx is dedicated to broadening the awareness and understanding of architecture, landscape architecture and design by sponsoring activities which foster evocative and creative dialogue withi

n the design community and with the general public. The Architalx Board of Directors, numbering 16 in 2020/2021, is composed of design professionals and others interested in the built environment.

If you are curious about the structure taking shape right off of 295 heading out of Portland, join us tonight, Tuesday, April 28 for the final lecture of the season featuring Timothy Mansfield of CambridgeSeven sharing “From Granite to Innovation: Designing the Roux Institute’s Vision for Maine’s Future”. His lecture will focus on the design of the Alfond Center, the 245,000-square-foot flagship academic building of the Roux Institute at Northeastern University in Portland, Maine. Designed by CambridgeSeven, the project offers a unique opportunity to unite bold architectural vision with regional identity and sustainable innovation.

The lecture also examines the project’s ambitious sustainability agenda, developed collaboratively with Northeastern University and the City of Portland. Key initiatives include geothermal heating and cooling, photovoltaic panels, mass timber construction using locally harvested wood, triple-glazed curtainwall systems optimized through solar radiation analysis, and shoreline restoration addressing sea level rise.

Join us tomorrow, Tuesday, April 28 for the final lecture of the season featuring Timothy Mansfield an architect recognized internationally for his leadership and design vision as President and CEO at CambridgeSeven, a 50-person Cambridge, Massachusetts-based architecture and exhibit design firm.

Last Wednesday we cohosted a viewing of the film Schindler Space Architect with the Portland Museum of Art. It was an honor to view this labor of love — 12 years in the making by Valentina Ganeva who joined us for a Q+A sharing personal stories and anecdotes about R.M. Schindler and his iconic structures. It was also a joy to host several contributors to the film, including Xander Berkeley and Debra Spark.

Thank you to all who joined us for this sold-out evening of celebrating the creative process honoring dedication to one’s craft.

What a week of Architalx! From lecture to tour to film to engaging dialogue — we are still processing the warmth and light of a week of memorable designs, visuals and conversations.

Here’s a quick visual recap of our evening and tour with Brigitte Shim where she guided us through the powerful projects have been working on over the last 2 decades and revisited a local masterpiece — both in process and in person.

Each of these projects are a reminder that light shapes a space and that nature and culture are always interwoven.

TONIGHT 🎥 Join us at the Portland Museum of Art for a special screening with filmmaker Valentina Ganeva featuring her documentary Schindler Space Architect, about the Austrian-born designer R.M. Schindler, a pioneer in his field who designed homes with a lifestyle of indoor-outdoor living in mind. Featuring narration by Meryl Streep, the late Udo Kier, and Maine resident Xander Berkeley, the film explores Schindler’s relationship with Frank Lloyd Wright, among others, as well as his wider oeuvre. Before the film, feel free to join us for an informal reception on the Lower Ground Floor from 5-6 pm. After the film, Architalx President Andrew Ashey will chat with the filmmaker.

Join us Tuesday, April 21 for our third lecture of the season featuring Brigitte Shim of  . Brigitte Shim first visited Portland, Maine, in 1998 to speak at Architalx, and returned multiple times during the design and construction of Congregation Bet Ha’am in South Portland, which opened in 2009 which she will offer a private tour of April 22 (see info below). We’re looking forward to her return this year as she discusses the firm’s work across architecture, landscape, interiors, furniture, and hardware.

Brigitte Shim was born in Kingston, Jamaica and lives in Toronto, Canada which is her home. She studied architecture and environmental studies at the University of Waterloo, Canada. In 1994, Shim and her partner A. Howard Sutcliffe founded Shim-Sutcliffe Architects in Toronto, Canada. Their design practice explores the integration and interrelated scales of architecture, landscape, furniture and fittings. Shim-Sutcliffe have realized built work in Canada, the United States, Europe and Asia focusing on place-making.
