MAINE FAITH LEADERS CALLED TO JOIN IN CONDEMNING ICE VIOLENCE
Thursday, July 23, 10am at Spring Point Ledge Lighthouse, 2 Fort Road in South Portland (next to SMCC campus)
Faith leaders from Maine, Texas and Florida--the three states where ICE has murdered residents in recent days--are gathering on Thursday to demand an end to the killing and violence and to call for transparent investigations, full accountability, and no more funding for ICE. Standing in the shadow of "The Ellis Island of the North," local Maine speakers Sara Ewing Merrill, Fritz Weiss, Imam Abdullahi Ahmed, and Jarrett Kerbel, prophetic pastors and pastoral prophets, will speak truth to power and call all of us to faithful resistance.

Clergy are asked to wear clerical garb (e.g., collar, stole, yarmulke, prayer shawl, kufi, etc.). In somber remembrance of the life and death of our neighbor, Joan Sebastian Guerrero, and all those who have died at the hands of ICE agents, we will refrain from displaying protest signs at this solemn event.

On Monday night, less than 12 hours after Joan Sebastian Guerrero was murdered by ICE agents in Biddeford, Mainers gathered for vigils in several locations, including Monument Square in Portland where MCC E.D. Rev Jane Field spoke to the gathering, expressing profound grief and righteous anger as she encouraged everyone to ground all they do in love of neighbor. The next morning, hundreds gathered outside the ICE offices in Scarborough to demand an end to ICE’s violence. MCC Board member and Director of Multifaith Justice Maine, Rev Dr Jodi Hayashida, opened the protest with words of comfort and challenge. MCC Board member Rob Levin served as part of the safety, security and de-escalation team who helped respond to an armed man who sought to disrupt the event.

As our nation marks its 250th year, let's pause to reflect honestly on our achievements and our failures, focused always forward on what God is calling us toward: a more just, compassionate, and peaceful world for all.

Born into slavery around 1818, Douglass became a key leader of the abolitionist movement.
