How does flooding become a chronic problem?

A new study led by graduate student Madison Fink and co-authored by GMRI Coastal Scientist Dr. Hannah Baranes found that flooding in South Carolina's tidal rivers and estuaries can rapidly increase as sea levels rise and river and coastal flooding interact. The research projects dramatic increases in flood frequency over the coming decades, underscoring the need for communities to plan for both coastal and river-driven flood hazards. These findings are relevant for coastal resilience projects up and down the coast.

We're proud to see Hannah mentoring emerging scientists while advancing research that helps communities adapt to a changing climate.

Teachers know that some of their most valued support comes from other teachers! It’s especially important in the evolving universe of STEM teaching. This spring Tonya Prentice, the 2020 Oxford County Teacher of the Year, and Laurie Spooner, 2025 Aroostook County Teacher of the Year, shared their strategies for supporting STEM educators at the National Science Teaching Association (NSTA) Conference in Anaheim, Calif. To Tonya and Laurie it’s all about collaborative peer leadership and professional community building. In the end, our students benefit. “You are helping an entire industry grow from the bottom up.”

Kat Lipp’s path to the ocean started far from the coast, but today she’s helping shape Maine’s aquaculture future as General Manager of Mere Point Oyster Company.

Through a first-in-the-nation aquaculture apprenticeship, Kat found a pathway into the blue economy, and now she’s mentoring the next generation entering the industry.

"One of my first meetings was with GMRI."

When Joshua Scherz began exploring whether Maine could resurrect its tinned seafood industry, one of his first stops was a meeting with our Ventures team. Three years later, that idea has become Maine Canned Fish.

Last night, we welcomed community members into the cannery to talk about what's possible when fishermen, seafood businesses, researchers, and entrepreneurs work together to create new markets for Gulf of Maine seafood.

The Gulf of Maine produces an incredible diversity of seafood, yet 70–90% of the seafood sold in the United States is imported. Building stronger local supply chains, creating markets for a wider range of species, and helping consumers discover local seafood are all part of changing that equation.

We're proud to partner with innovators like Maine Canned Fish who are helping connect more people to seafood from our own waters.

“When you support programs like this one, you're not just supporting a farmer. You are helping an entire industry grow from the bottom up."

This upcoming Oceans Day, we’re taking the opportunity to highlight how ocean careers can transform lives while strengthening coastal communities and ecosystems.

We hope you’ll join us by June 8. Our goal is to raise $5,000, and the first 20 new donors will receive a GMRI-branded reusable Baggu tote. Your gift will help more people find their path to the water.
