Long before America the Beautiful became one of America’s most beloved patriotic songs, one of its most influential musical settings was born right here in Portland.

In 1913, Portland’s first Municipal Organist, Will C. Macfarlane, composed his setting of Katharine Lee Bates’ poem for the nation’s first municipal pageant on the Eastern Prom. Performing on the Kotzschmar Organ, Macfarlane helped create a version that Bates herself later recognized as the setting that had “won widest acceptance.”

More than a century later, this story remains a remarkable reminder of the Kotzschmar Organ’s place in our nation’s musical history.
