Altrusa International - Portland, Maine Club We are a non-profit club devoted to delivering books and literacy, scholarships, and serving our communities. Love, Literacy and Legacy.

Portland Altrusa meets twice a month for ten months, September through June. The business meeting is held at 6pm on the first Wednesday of each month at the Westbrook Community Center (WCC), 426 Bridge St, Westbrook in the Oak Room. Our program meeting is held at 6pm on the third Wednesday of each month and the location may vary. Contact us to confirm the location each month (WCC, Zoom or at a loc

al restaurant). Message us to confirm meeting information and location each month. Altrusans also participate in regular community service activities throughout the year. Our projects include:

* ABC Literacy - Reading to kindergarteners in many schools in the greater Portland area. Each child selects a forever book of their very own thanks to the generous customers of Books A Million.

* Altrusa Gives Books - Visit our website to request books for your school or non-profit organization. https://www.altrusaportland.org/request-books

* PROP’s Summer Lunch Program - Book distribution in 18 locations along with enrichment activities for the kids

* Books Behind Bars - Providing books at various reading levels for prisoners and their visiting family members

* Scholarships - $$$ - Providing college and back-to-work grants

* Empty Bowl Supper - To benefit Project FEED- Serving soup to feed the hungry.

* Ronald MacDonald House Guest Chefs - Once a month we cook a meal for all of the families staying at RMH.

* Bags of Hope - Supporting women leaving recovery with bags containing toiletries and personal care items.

* Barron Center Gardens - Spring and Fall Clean up of gardens

* A.S.T.R.A. - We proudly support this youth services group at Lake Region High School. They use their Abilities to Serve our community, participate in Training that improves leadership skills, take Responsibility for their work together, and are proud of member Achievements that make a real difference to our world.

We held our monthly business meeting in the Oak Room tonight, right across from the book drop location. Thanks to the Portland Altrusans and others who have dropped off books to kick-off this Community Book Drive!!



Now until April 17, the Westbrook Community Center, in partnership with the Westbrook-Gorham Rotary and Altrusa International - Portland, Maine Club, will be collecting gently-used children's books for all ages, babies to young teens.

Drop-off is located at the donation bin across from the Westbrook Community Center Reception Kiosk in the Central Hallway.

A group of Altrusans from Altrusa International of Central Connecticut, Altrusa International - Portland, Maine Club, and Altrusans from Northeastern Connecticut gathered together to celebrate the 50th Birthday of the Altrusa International of Merrimack Valley Club.

3 Guests spoke of Altrusa of Merrimack Valley’s longtime projects- Nashua Soup kitchen and shelter, Alternative House and the Veterans Community Center.

Wednesday during our business meeting, we initiated a new member, Kristina Kentigian. Karen Valley presented her with the Altrusa pin and she added her loop to our “Chain of Service”.

Altrusa, founded in 1917, has clubs around the globe. Our main mission is to spread Literacy, Love and Legacy. Our Portland club was established in 1929. Serving Ronald McDonald House Charities of Maine, Wayside Food Programs, Project Feed, and providing Brand New FOREVER books to over 2500 Kindergarten students in the area, We celebrate our volunteers and invite you to consider us in your search to serve your community.

Wednesday we proudly added another link to our “Chain of Service”.
Ann Fasulo Nappi was initiated and has become an Altrusan.
Patricia Ledger-Maxim led the ceremony, with Karen Valley, President, and members, Lee-Ann VanAtta and Marilyn MacDowell participating. Debbie LePage Lemieux as her sponsor presented her with her Altrusa pin to be worn proudly over the heart, representing this special privilege and responsibility.
