Today the Summit Project honors the life of ADCS Samuel Dumond, 37, who passed away on this day in 2024. Samuel was raised in Edmundston, NB, Canada. He played hockey, baseball and enjoyed snowboarding. As a child, he always wanted to be a mechanic, so right after high school graduation, he left for Maine to join the Navy in 2006 and was posted in Virginia, California and Hawaii, changing platforms several times. Sam deployed multiple times with his last being the 2024 USS Theodore Roosevelt deployment. We thank you, Samuel, for your service and sacrifice.

REMEMBRANCE REQUIRES ACTION.

Yesterday at the Fryeburg Fair reminded us exactly why The Summit Project exists.

Our morning volunteers, Amy, Steve and Pete, spent the day welcoming visitors, sharing the stories of Maine’s fallen heroes, and helping people understand the meaning behind the stones we carry.

It was a meaningful and productive day, but some of the most powerful moments were completely unexpected. Several visitors stopped at our Hero Wall and recognized someone they knew.

One moment in particular stopped us in our tracks.

The son of fallen hero Jeremiah J. Holmes visited our booth and stood beside his father’s photograph on the Hero Wall. In that photograph, he is just a baby in his father’s arms. Today, years later, he stood in front of that same image.

This is why remembrance matters.

But remembrance does not happen by itself. Remembrance requires action. It requires people willing to show up, tell these stories, engage with our community, and make sure Maine’s fallen heroes are never forgotten.

Kirk, 30, of South Portland, Maine; assigned to the 3rd Squadron, 61st Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Carson, Colo.; who died on this day in 2009 in Kamdesh, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked his contingency outpost with small arms, rocket-propelled gr***de and indirect fires.
