Can you see the difference between the rain and birds on radar? Last night was huge! You will likely hear a lot of song birds chirping this morning. There were more birds migrating overnight across the US than people living in it. 409,600,000 birds was the birdcast estimate peak based on the radar algorithms. Tonight will be even bigger in our region as that low level jet, or bird highway, will be right over us locally.

It started with a chainsaw. 🪓

A landowner spotted a large dead tree on his property and decided to take it down. What he didn't know: inside that tree, in a deep cavity carved by their parents, three pileated woodpecker chicks had just hatched.

By the time the tree hit the ground, their nest was gone. Their parents had scattered. The chicks had nothing.

He called Avian Haven. Within hours, the triplets were in our care.

What followed was three to four weeks of thorough care — feeding, monitoring, and watching as their brilliant red crests deepened and their confidence grew. They were vocal, captivating, and absolutely determined to be wild.

When it was time for release, the landowner — who had followed their progress with a mix of guilt and hope — invited us back to his land. He watched all three birds fly strong and sure into the tree line.

His remorse had turned into something else: a determination to do better.

We'll pass that on here: avoid trimming trees or cutting branches between April 1 and August 30. Spring is active nesting season, and many birds — like pileated woodpeckers — nest in cavities you'd never see from the ground.

Stories like this one are only possible because of the resources and expertise waiting when birds arrive. Help us be ready for every bird that needs us.
