Hekima Place Building the future- one girl at a time. Hekima Place is a home in Kenya for vulnerable and at risk girls. Founded in 2005 by U. S. Thanks!

The name “Hekima” was chosen for its Kiswahili meaning: Wisdom. native Kate Fletcher, the home opened with just 10 girls but has grown to 60 members of the Hekima Place family. The girls are given a loving, faith-based home with nutritious meals, health care, and, very importantly, an education to enable them to succeed on their own once their schooling is completed. At Hekima Place, each girl lives with a loving Kenyan staff member called "mum" – growing within a faith-based "family" with "sisters" (other orphaned girls) as companions and workmates. Today, Kenyans celebrate Huduma Day — a holiday rooted in unity, service, and community. Formerly known as Moi Day, it's a time for Kenyans to give back, whether through neighborhood clean-ups, visiting the elderly, or community improvement projects.

We want to thank everyone who has traveled far and wide, over the years, to Hekima Place in huduma — service. As we try to pay that forward, we carry the spirit of huduma with us every day.

One thing we see in our classrooms is how early the girls learn the value of collaboration—working together, listening to one another, and lifting each other up.

When they work as a team, challenges feel a little lighter and successes are even sweeter. These are skills they’ll carry with them far beyond the classroom and into the communities they’ll one day lead.

A heartfelt thank you to the cooks and kitchen staff at Hekima Place and Hekima Hills Learning Centre, who prepare nourishing meals for the girls and the students every day. Much of what fills those plates is grown on our own shamba (farm).

Fresh produce is cultivated with care, harvested, and turned into meals that are made with love. From the soil to the table, it's a beautiful cycle of care that sustains the girl’s minds and spirits.

We value family here at Hekima Place. In fact, that value is something we’re incredibly proud of and strive to nurture every day.

When the girls arrive, they may be strangers to one another. But over time, they share a home, a routine, countless everyday moments, and a life together. Slowly, those relationships grow—and they leave with bonds that feel like family.

That bond is very real. And what a privilege it is to watch it grow right in front of us.

This September 8th marks International Literacy Day — and we're celebrating every child who's picked up a book, sounded out a new word, or discovered a story that sparked their imagination.

Literacy is a lifeline for the students at Hekima Hills Learning Centre. It builds confidence and gives children the tools to write their own future.

Thank you to everyone who makes learning possible — from the teachers to the Mums and the big sisters who show the children that reading opens doors.
