Pittsburgh Recorder Society

Pittsburgh Recorder Society Welcome to the Pittsburgh Chapter of the American Recorder Society, a perfect place for recorder players of all levels to play consort music.

We meet for coached group music the third Sunday of each month from September to May. We thank the United First Methodist Church for opening their parlor for our meetings. If you're just visiting the city with your recorder, please drop in! The chapter also offers members beginning recorder lessons and technique sessions at 2pm before our meetings.

The Berliner Blockflöten Orchester - BBO is looking for players, and they have some low bass instruments available to rent.
Only drawback for most of us is how far away Berlin is from here. :P

In case you happen to have an extra $10,000 lying around and really, really want to have ivory instruments, here's your chance.

Yesterday we received a truly unique pair of recorders for resale: a von Huene soprano ( #1436, 1970) and alto ( #2156, 1973) both made of solid ivory. This is the von Huene 'standard' design at a=440, the model Friedrich von Huene developed in the late 1960's; it is not based on a particular historical model. These are exceptionally fine playing instruments, as well as being very beautiful and are supplied in a fitted hard case.

Although there are quite a few surviving instruments made of ivory (as well as tortoise shell), no one would consider making this pair today. These are simply a product of a different time. The ivory tusk from which these were made was bought in 1959 and their production pre-dates the US signing of the CITES treaty (July 1, 1975) so they are exempt from the current international regulations. *

Ivory recorders tend to be unusually responsive with very agile articulation. The labium of the alto was damaged in shipping in the early 1980's and we professionally repaired it at that time.

Ivory soprano and alto pair in hard case. $10,000
The current owner will consider selling the instruments separately.

* However, no official documentation can be provided, so we will still not ship these outside the US.
