We were pleased to hold our third annual Regatta on the Allegheny for Pittsburgh area high school students. PPSL is a Pittsburgh-based all-volunteer not-for-profit organization that provides learn-to-sail and sailboat racing opportunities for Pittsburgh area high school students with a no-turn-away policy based on ability to pay. We also offer a learn-to-sail program for adults. Program information is available at www.pittsburghsailing.com

Our sailors were very interested in learning about efforts to improve the water quality of Pittsburgh area rivers. Scholastic Outreach Team members of the regional wastewater treatment organization, ALCOSAN, recently met with our sailors to review ongoing projects to expand their treatment plant and address stormwater impact on the regional combined sewer/stormwater system. The presentation included testing of water quality in the river next to our sailing platform. ALCOSAN was the first corporate sponsor of the Point of Pittsburgh Sailing League and recently renewed their sponsorship. We deeply appreciate ALCOSAN's support for our sailing program and their leadership to improve the quality of our rivers.

The weather was great today, May 23rd, for our first sail of the season. One of our instructors, Kerry, did a wonder job of introducing a few of our high school students to the sport of sailing.

We are pleased to share a video on our October 7th, Regatta on the Allegheny. Our sailors did a great job in gusty wind conditions. Most of our sailors had never been on a sailboat before joining the program this year.
And please take a moment to visit our website to see how you can support high school sailing for those who traditionally have not had access to the sport of sailing. www.pittsburghsailing.com

Like all youth sailing programs, we are looking at ways to protect our sailors from concussions. We've decided to see if padding booms would help. The material used is a dense foam pad product used to protect car doors from garage walls. The product has a strong adhesive. So far no head hits with booms. I would note our RS Quests have high booms. The product used is Garage Smith GWP04 Garage Wall Protector Car Door Protectors available through Amazon. Just wandering if other programs are considering padding booms.

The October 7th Regatta on the Allegheny was a great success. Our high school sailors took on gusty winds in a series of high competitive races. While ultimately there was a first place, second place and a tie for third place, all were winners in this first high school sailing regatta in the City of Pittsburgh.

The Sailing Club at the University of Pittsburgh recently had a chance to try out the Point of Pittsburgh Sailing League's sailing simulator. They enjoyed working with simulator particularly how how the sails responded to the fan-generated wind. More than a decade ago, PPSL help to form the sailing club.
