Freedom is more than release.

Juneteenth is a celebration of Black resilience, progress, and the enduring pursuit of freedom. It is also a reminder that many barriers continue to disproportionately impact Black communities, particularly justice-impacted people and their families.

Long after people have returned home, collateral consequences can continue to affect access to housing, employment, civic participation, and economic opportunity. These barriers impact entire communities and limit the ability of people to move forward with dignity.

At Barred Business, we believe people are more than their records. As we honor our history and celebrate Black resilience, we remain committed to building power alongside justice-impacted people and creating communities where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.

Major victory for Georgia.

Plans to redraw congressional and legislative maps have been halted, preserving existing districts and protecting representation across the state.

Had these efforts moved forward, Black communities and justice-impacted people stood to lose even more political power. Representation shapes who makes decisions, where resources go, and whose voices are heard.

This week’s outcome matters because communities that have long been over-policed and underrepresented should not continue losing power.

The work continues.

Change starts when communities come together.

When people share information, support one another, and stay engaged, communities become stronger and opportunities become possible.

That’s why Barred Business exists: to educate, organize, and build power with justice-impacted people and their families.

Because no one should have to navigate these systems alone.

Join the movement and help create pathways to opportunity across Georgia.

Who gets a seat at the table matters!

Today our ED, Bri Simpson will be speaking at the Juneteenth Special Session Rally alongside advocates and community leaders from across Georgia.

At a time when representation and political power are on the line, directly impacted voices deserve to be heard. Communities need more than policies made about them, they deserve a voice in shaping them

Protecting our future means showing up, staying engaged, and making sure the people closest to the issues are part of the conversation.

The movement grows when more people recognize themselves in it.

Justice impact doesn’t stop with one person. It reaches families, caregivers, children, partners, and entire communities.

Every conversation, every shared story, and every person who learns about the realities facing justice-impacted people helps build understanding and move the work forward.

When more people recognize the barriers that exist, more people become part of creating solutions.

If you or someone you know is justice-impacted in Atlanta or Augusta, there’s a place for you here.

No one gets left behind when people know their rights.

Too many justice-impacted people are told they can’t vote, never receive accurate information, or don’t know their rights have been restored.

That’s why voter education and rights restoration education matter.

Every person deserves the opportunity to understand their rights, make informed decisions, and have their voice heard in their community.

Knowledge is power. Access is power. Participation is power.

The cost of incarceration doesn’t stop with one person.

When someone is incarcerated, families often carry the weight. Children grow up without a parent at home. Grandparents step in as caregivers. Partners take on additional responsibilities. Households lose income. Communities lose leaders, mentors, and support systems.

That’s why we work to build power with justice-impacted people and their families. Because the impact reaches far beyond a conviction, and so does the work of creating opportunity, stability, and change.

Join a membership base that educates, activates, and builds power with justice-impacted people across Georgia.

Together, we’re creating pathways to opportunity and making sure our communities are not left behind.

Justice-impacted leadership belongs in every room where decisions, ideas, and strategies are being shaped.

Too often, people closest to the issues are excluded from conversations about solutions. Real change happens when lived experience is recognized as expertise and community knowledge is treated as essential.

This week, conversations at the Movements Against Mass Incarceration Retreat focused on movement memory, accessibility, and preserving the stories, lessons, and leadership that continue to shape this work.

Building a future rooted in justice means making sure directly impacted voices are not only included, but valued, documented, and remembered.

Community doesn’t happen by accident. It happens when people show up.

Every month, people across Atlanta and Augusta come together to talk about the issues affecting justice-impacted people and their families, from voting rights and housing to employment, policy, and community solutions.

These meetings are where relationships are built, information is shared, and people find ways to take action together.

Whether you’re directly impacted, have a loved one who is, or want to support the work, there’s a seat for you at the table.
