Next Heartland meeting.

It's been a hugely busy time since Thursday preparing for, participating in, and working at the 2026 Oklahoma Council of the Blind Conference and Convention in Tulsa. What a successful event. FaceBook should have some cool pictures soon about the convention, and our OCB website at okcb.org will eventually have pictures of the fun special sessions, awards, the auction, and so much more.

The 2027 OCB Conference and Convention will be in Oklahoma City, most likely sometime in September.

The next Heartland Council of the Blind meeting is October 3, Saturday, at 1:30pm at the OKC West Side Lions Club located at 4135 N.W. 10th Street. Thanks again to Lion Phil, who is also a faithful member of HCB, for setting up the room for our meetings.

Our speaker will talk about her journey with dealing with and changing her life when she lost her sight. She will share her story about her new massage business. You won't want to miss this inspiring presentation.

Please bring a snack to share.

We are also going out to eat after the meeting at King's BBQ. Information will be provided at the meeting and below you will find information on the menu, the address, etc.

Our Coping with Vision Loss seminar is coming up on October 17 from 9:30am-3pm. Our seminar team has placed flyers in senior centers, public libraries, and a multitude of other locations. If you know someone who has recently lost sight, or has continued to lose sight, whether recently or some time ago, this seminar is for them. Life in general has continual changes, and so does life as a blind person ... emotionally, physically, constantly adjusting how you do things at home and at work, etc. Below this message you will find a Coping with Vision Loss flyer. Please invite friends and families. We have something for everyone, even a session on families and friends of people who have loved ones who are losing their vision.

A free lunch will be provided. Also, a wealth of information from agencies, vendors exhibiting products and services, and hearing from people who have been on the journey for a long time will speak about their experiences. There will be plenty of time for Q&A.

For more information on the Coping with Vision Loss seminar, feel free to contact Frances Poindexter at (405) 642-1068 or email her at [email protected]. You may also contact Vicky Golightly at (405) 740-6227 or email her at [email protected]. It would be wonderful if you are able to contact us in advance to notify us you are coming so we have enough food and handouts.

For more information about the October 3 HCB meeting, please feel free to contact President Pam Holloway at (405) 365-9717 or email her at [email protected]. You may also contact Vice President Vicky Golightly at (405) 740-6227 or email her at [email protected]. Please leave a message if Pam or Vicky don't pick up and they will contact you as soon as possible.

So, keep on reading.

Below you will find in the order listed:

1. The HCB Zoom information, and

2. Everything you need to know about King's BBQ, and

3. The Coping with Vision Loss flyer.

We hope to see everyone on October 3!!!

Respectfully,

Lynn (Vicky) Golightly, HCB Vice President

Heartland group enjoyed the others from Duncan Council of the Blind and Lawton Council of the Blind yesterday. Fun time with all of you.

We had a great time yesterday visiting the Chisholm Trail Heritage Center in Duncan and enjoying lunch at Giuseppe's in Marlow with fellow members of the Oklahoma Council of the Blind, including the Heartland Chapter in Oklahoma City and the Lawton Council of the Blind.

Thank you to the Heartland Chapter of the Oklahoma Council of the Blind for organizing this wonderful event. A special thank you to Callie at the Chisholm Trail Heritage Center for giving us such an informative and welcoming guided tour.

We especially appreciated the thoughtful descriptions that helped make the museum experience more accessible and meaningful for our group.

People who are blind or have low vision appreciate history, art, and culture just as much as anyone else. We simply need access to experience them.

Below is the image of the sculpture, , "On the Trail" with the alternate text attached to the image.

A photograph of the bronze sculpture titled "On the Chisholm Trail," created by Oklahoma artist Paul Moore and located outside the Chisholm Trail Heritage Center in Duncan, Oklahoma.

The sculpture is monumental in scale, standing about as tall as a one-story house and stretching approximately as wide as two full-size pickup trucks parked end to end. It is mounted on a broad stone base with a tall, gently curved bronze backdrop that frames the entire scene like a stage.

The sculpture captures a moment from a 19th-century cattle drive frozen in mid-motion. At the center, a covered prairie wagon with a canvas top rolls forward, pulled by two muscular horses. A driver sits high on the wagon seat, holding the reins as if guiding the team across the open prairie.

Beside the wagon, several Texas longhorn cattle stride forward with their distinctive sweeping horns extending several feet from tip to tip. Their heads are lowered and their legs are positioned as if walking, giving the impression that the herd is steadily moving north along the Chisholm Trail.

A cowboy on horseback rides alongside the herd, sitting upright in the saddle as he watches over the cattle. Both horse and rider lean slightly forward, reinforcing the sense of movement and purpose.

Every figure is sculpted at life size, allowing viewers to imagine standing among the wagon, horses, cowboys, and cattle. Fine details, including the horses' muscles, the folds of the canvas wagon cover, the cowboys' clothing, saddles, ropes, and the texture of the cattle's hides, give the monument a remarkable sense of realism.

The warm bronze surface catches sunlight, creating highlights and shadows that emphasize the depth of the sculpture. Rather than portraying a single dramatic moment, "On the Chisholm Trail" conveys the steady, determined rhythm of a cattle drive, honoring the people and livestock that traveled the Chisholm Trail across Oklahoma during the late 1800s.
