Today is Al-Hijra, or the Islamic New Year! The Islamic New Year marks the beginning of a new year in the Islamic lunar calendar. It commemorates the Hijrah, the migration of the Prophet Muhammad from Mecca to Medina in 622 CE, which marks the start of the Islamic calendar. Many Muslims observe the day with prayer, reflection, and remembrance rather than large celebrations.

Today is the Martyrdom of Guru Arjan Dev Sahib which commemorates the sacrifice of the fifth Sikh Guru, who was tortured and executed in 1606 under the orders of the Mughal emperor Jahangir. Remembered for his unwavering faith, Guru Arjan compiled the Adi Granth and emphasized selfless service, justice, and devotion to God.

"Interfaith Atlanta is deeply concerned by the U.S. Department of Defense's recent decision to reduce its list of officially recognized religious affiliations from over 200 to 30. When faith communities are officially recognized, service members can access chaplains, observe holy days, and practice their traditions without having to choose between their beliefs and their duty. Narrowing official recognition sends a troubling message that only certain faith traditions, and certain military service members, are worthy of value and respect. All who serve our country deserve to be understood and accepted regardless of their religious beliefs. We hope this moment can serve as a reminder to all of us of the importance of interfaith dialogue and relationships. We commit ourselves to continuing to work within Atlanta to foster shared understanding, cooperation, and peace."

Tonight marks the beginning of Eid al-Adha! Eid al-Adha is an Islamic holiday that commemorates the willingness of the Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) to sacrifice his son in obedience to God. It is observed annually during the Islamic month of Dhu al-Hijjah. The holiday includes communal prayers, the ritual sacrifice of livestock, and the distribution of meat to family members, friends, and those in need. Eid Mubarak!
