Chris White, CEO of Vision Ireland - "The gap between legislation and lived experience is impossible to ignore".

He added - "The European Accessibility Act was meant to remove barriers, but for many people, those barriers are still there every time they go online... We’re seeing a worrying disconnect. People are still struggling to access basic services online, and many organisations do not understand what compliance looks like. That has to change."

An Irish sight loss charity is calling on organisations to assess their digital platforms and take 'immediate steps' to address accessibility gaps.

With the confirmation that RTÉ will not be providing audio description for its World Cup coverage, essentially excluding blind and visually impaired fans from fully engaging with one of the world’s most celebrated sporting events, there is an alternative for blind and visually impaired football fans in Ireland.

The FIFA Audio Description app provides real-time, professionally produced descriptive commentary, offering detailed insights into gameplay, player movements, and the atmosphere of matches.

Whilst FIFA is getting a lot of negative press for getting things wrong in the lead-up to the tournament, its commitment to accessibility is not one of them and should be commended. The app is fully accessible, compatible with screen readers such as VoiceOver, and is available for free on both iOS and Android platforms.

While this solution offers an important workaround, it should not replace the responsibility of national broadcasters.

There’s a tendency to talk about loneliness in abstract terms, statistics, trends, and policy responses.

But what often gets lost is the lived reality.

In an interview with the Loneliness Taskforce Research Network, our Head of Counselling, Wellbeing & Emotional Support, Peter O'Toole O’Toole, shared insight into how loneliness is experienced by people who are blind or vision impaired.

For many, loneliness is not simply about being alone. It is shaped by barriers to participation, inaccessible environments, limited transport options, digital exclusion, and the gradual erosion of independence.

What’s clear is that awareness alone isn’t enough. Real impact comes from creating opportunities for connection, building confidence, and removing the barriers that prevent people from fully engaging in their communities.

At Vision Ireland, our approach focuses on practical, person-centred supports, from counselling and emotional wellbeing services to rehabilitation and technology training, empowering people to reconnect on their own terms.

If loneliness is driven by exclusion, then inclusion must be the solution.

This is a collective responsibility for organisations, policymakers and communities alike.

The European Disability Federation is collecting information to prepare a report on AI and women with disabilities. Participation is voluntary and the survey is anonymous unless you provide your email.
