The Irish Bioenergy Association (IrBEA) held its 24th National Bioenergy Conference this month at the Killashee Hotel, Co. Kildare. We would like to thank everyone who joined us, and extend a special thank you to all the speakers for their valuable contributions.

This year’s conference was proudly sponsored by Gas Networks Ireland, the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) and Worrell Harvesting Ltd

🎙️ Opening Address – Maurice Ryan President of IrBEA & Director of Business Development at Green Belt ltd services highlighted the urgency of advancing bioenergy in Ireland:

“There is no doubt that the time for bioenergy is now, given the challenges facing us in terms of climate change, decarbonisation and delivery on Ireland’s renewable energy targets. There is significant opportunity and great potential for all forms of bioenergy, including the role of forestry and timber production as valuable income drivers in rural communities .”

He stressed that bioenergy and renewable heat from solid biomass, are key enablers of sustainable forest management and maximising forest potential for timber production.

💡 Seán Finan, CEO of Irish Bioenergy Association - IRBEA underlined the progress being made and called for swift policy action:

“The building blocks for the development of the Irish bioenergy industry are beginning to line up. We now need to see an acceleration in the rollout of key policy and legislative frameworks to bring projects forward and drive action on the ground.”

Key takeaways:

Biogas / Biomethane
📌 Implement the Renewable Heat Obligation (RHO) scheme as quickly as possible.
📌 Notify the EU Commission urgently.
📌 Publish RHO ambitions to 2035 and beyond.
📌 Release capital funding details for biomethane.
📌 Introduce minimum 50% capital support for farm-scale biogas plants.
📌 Address planning, licensing, and regulatory barriers.

Solid Biomass and Wood Fuels
📌 Extend the Support Scheme for Renewable Heat (SSRH) to the ETS sector.
📌 Remove the 1MW cap under SSRH.
📌 Recognise solid biomass as the most cost-effective renewable heat source.
📌 Include solid biomass under the RHO.
📌 Strengthen solid fuel regulation enforcement.

Liquid Biofuels
📌 Legislate for minimum inclusion of Irish biodiesel in future blends (B10/B20).
📌 Tackle fraudulent or unsustainable non-EU biofuels
📌 Support and grow indigenous biofuel production in Ireland

Biochar and Carbon Products
📌 Recognise biochar in national carbon removal frameworks.
📌 Increase research and awareness of biochar applications.
📌 Highlight biochar’s role in emissions reduction and bio-based innovation.

💬 Closing Remarks
“IrBEA and its members are eager to meaningfully contribute to decarbonisation, emissions reductions, and renewable energy targets,” said Seán Finan. “We are ready to take the next steps to make bioenergy happen now.”
