We are holding a solidarity rally this Sunday to stand together against the racist pogroms that have been happening across Belfast. Bring flags, bring banners and meet us at the GPO at 2 pm. We want to show that Dublin stands up to racism, and that we want diversity not division. We have planned the Dublin rally for Sunday as we would like to encourage people outside of Belfast to make the journey up to support their rally on Saturday at Belfast City Hall at 1pm if they are able to.

We are appalled at the extent of the violence that has been inflicted on migrant communities. We echo the calls by UAR Belfast for Trade Unions north and south to take up the anti-racist and anti-facist cause as a serious campaign within their membership. It will be through a united workers movement that this hate will be defeated.

We encourage everyone reading this to take the same responsibility and ownership over anti-racism, and actively fight against racism wherever they see it. This is a fight that needs to be carried out by everyone.

Rights of migrant workers to be discussed in Dublin

The rights of migrant workers in Dublin will be front and centre of a discussion taking place in the city this week.

The Teachers Club on Dublin’s Parnell Square will host the discussion, led by the Pan African Workers Association (PAWA), Industrial Workers of the World (IWW) along side members of the African Centre Ireland on Saturday, the 13th June.

The event, which begins at 2pm, is open to everyone with an interest on the rights of migrant workers.

A spokesperson for the organisers said: “Migrant workers are often in some of the most precarious positions in the labour market.

“While economies depend upon their labour, they are routinely subjected to poverty wages, labour rights abuses and health and safety violations.”

A spokesperson for the IWW union meanwhile said: “We know that governments, businesses and the law will not protect the dignity of migrant workers. History has consistently shown that only the power of organised workers can generate lasting improvements in labour conditions.

“The Pan African Workers Association (PAWA) and the IWW have been mobilising with many workers in care, logistics and hospitality to build the power of the working class.

“At this event, the key activists will discuss the organising challenges, strategies and successes they have experienced in the last few years, the challenges presented by the visa system and how we can collectively organise to improve our lives as migrant workers.”

If you applied to renew your IRP card before it expired, you have the right to keep working for up to 12 weeks from the date your card expires while your application is being processed. Your employer cannot dismiss you during this time.

If your employer dismisses you during this period, contact MRCI.
