Smart Works provides high quality clothing and coaching to unemployed women with upcoming job interviews. Smart Works helps them to feel confident, look fabulous, succeed at their job interview and move on with their life. This year we will dress over 10,000 women in a complete outfit of stylish, high quality clothing donated by retailers and professionals.

A unique opportunity to get a glimpse into the conversations Smart Works Fashion Club brings to its members throughout the year.

Why do we buy what we buy?

From impulse purchases and trend cycles to confidence, identity and belonging, our relationship with fashion is often shaped by forces we rarely stop to examine.

As part of London Climate Action Week, Smart Works Fashion Club is bringing together , Sarah Crook, Dr Dion Terrelonge and for an evening exploring the psychology behind consumption and what it means for the future of fashion.

Following the panel, guests will have the opportunity to join smaller breakout conversations, diving deeper into topics including shopping habits, second-hand fashion, industry change, and the connection between clothing and confidence.

Meet Olivia. Smart Works met her for the first time when she was 19. She’d never had a job interview and spent 21 hours a week looking for work. Hearing nothing. Silence damages confidence the most. Not rejection — silence.

We’ve known this for years and we tell anyone who will listen. In fact, Smart Works North East sent Ruby (Outreach Lead) to tell the Department of Work and Pensions following an invitation to share insights and details about our service with with Alan Milburn earlier this year. Ruby told him how young women are trying but the system isn’t recognising it. How silence can erode confidence making the climb to get a job even steeper.
This week a government report is telling the whole country. That youth unemployment is so high, we risk leaving 1 in 6 young people behind.
If there’s a young woman you know who has sent application after application and heard nothing back, tell her about Smart Works. Tell her she’s not alone. It’s not her.

🩵Job rejection and being unemployed is a mental health issue. And it doesn’t get talked about enough.
The women we support have often been searching for months. The silence, the knockbacks, the not knowing why — it takes away your self belief. In fact 63% tell us their confidence has sharply fallen by the time they reach us.
We use a mirror and a new outfit to combat this. And a cheerleading, compassionate Smart Works dresser who is in her corner and can already see what they can’t see in themselves yet. Before our insanely brilliant coaches then help to unlock the self-belief that was always there.
95% of our clients leave feeling more confident they can get the job. 68% who attend our interview preparation appointments succeed.

You did it. 🎉 A huge thank you to the many fabulous, legendary supporters who took part in Step Up For Smart Works this year. Together you walked 10,000 steps a day, have so far raised nearly £35,000, and clocked up almost 32 million steps to help women facing unemployment. We hope you’ve treated your feet to a soothing few days rest!

But seriously - you turned movement into opportunity and stepped up so more women could step into brighter futures. We are beyond grateful for every step, every donation and for believing in the potential of the women we support. THANK YOU for stepping up and making a real impact. 🩵🩵🩵✨

👟Step Up starts today! Our annual fundraising event reminds us that progress is built one step at a time and at Smart Works we believe that extraordinary things can happen when women step forward with the right support behind them.

Hundreds of our supporters have todays started their ten day challenge to help more women step out of unemployment and into new beginnings.

🩵 People like Masonmeh, who secured a role as a Graduate Engineer Geologist after support from our Smart Works Leeds centre, and Kisheka, who stepped into a new role as a Matron Secretary after our team at Smart Works Birmingham helped her unlock her full potential.

From GP administration, employee communications and HR, to cyber security, trade marketing, finance and legal support, these are the types of roles our clients are stepping into — women from every walk of life taking steps that change their futures.

Play your part and help to change the futures for the thousands of women we support.

The sun has finally decided to show up ☀️ — and this Friday, we hope you will too.

As fundraising teams and Smart Works supporters across the country get ready for our annual fundraiser Step Up for Smart Works, we’re thinking about the women who aren’t getting their steps in on the way to a job they love, join a walk team challenge or enjoy the benefits of walking meetings in the summer. Yet, they’re ready for that feeling — the momentum, the sense of achievement, the head‑held‑high stride. And your steps can help make that possible.

From 1–10 May, you can run, walk or roll 10,000 steps a day and raise £200 so more women can step out of unemployment and into new beginnings. It’s fun, it’s inclusive, it brings people together — and yes, there’s still time to sign up.

If you’ve been waiting for a sign… this is it. The sun’s out, the countdown is on, and honestly — why wouldn’t you join in?

The wait is over! Our latest sale is now live at our Pop Up shop at:

📍 57–59 Monmouth Street, Covent Garden, London

Open until 29th April the shop will be filled with high-quality pre-loved clothing and new pieces from brands such as , ’s Child, , , , and many more who donate their clothing to support our work.
✨Every purchase at our Pop Up keeps clothing in circulation and helps fund our service. 100% of the proceeds goes towards providing women across the UK with the clothing, coaching and confidence they need to succeed at interview and move into work. In 2025, 68% of our clients secured employment after receiving support from Smart Works.
♻️💚 A clothing donation point will be available in store every day and on Earth Day – Tuesday 21st April – we’ll be offering a 10% discount to anyone who brings in high quality donations of bags or shoes to use against any purchases that day.
With less than 20% of new and used clothing currently recycled in the UK, our Pop Up is a practical way for shoppers to engage with circular fashion, extend the life of garments, support responsible practices.
