N1 Women's Institute

N1 Women's Institute N1 Islington Women's Institute. The WI is the largest voluntary women’s organisation in the UK. We love all things food, drink and craft.

N1 Women's Institute meets on the last Tuesday of the month at St James' Hall on the corner of Packington St and Prebend St N1 near Angel. The main purposes of the Women’s Institute organisation are to enable women who are interested in issues associated with modern life, including arts, crafts and sciences, to improve and develop conditions of their lives, to advance their education in citizenshi

p, in public questions both national and international, in music, drama and other cultural subjects and in all branches of agriculture, handicrafts, home economics, health and social welfare. Anyone who identifies as a woman may join, no matter what their views on religion or politics may be. The organisation is non-sectarian and non-party political. This does not prevent Women’s Institutes from concerning themselves with matters of political and religious significance.

For our next meeting we have pictures and penguins! Our speaker, Ann Buxton, will talk to us about Antarctica and show us pictures she took while on a trip there – penguins, icebergs and more…

Antarctica is a fascinating place, quite apart from the penguins, so it should be a very interesting evening.

April is our annual meeting, where we will be welcoming Yvette to oversee the formal elements. We will be reporting back on the year and voting in the committee for the year ahead – with refreshments and a social to follow.
New committee members are needed to refresh us with new ideas!

We enjoyed a very interesting evening sharing photographs and the stories they represented, and learned some new things about our friends.

We had photos of places, of birds, of objects, all representing events in our lives or special trips.

The picture shown is of a very rainy, but special place.

We’ll be travelling again for our March meeting, but down memory lane with photos this time rather than food.

Members will be bringing pictures from sojourns in different countries to share and discuss.

Our February was a delicious event – food tourism. We had all chosen one of a random selection of countries (from a dish full of slips of paper) with the idea that we’d bring an item of food or drink from that country and an interesting snippet of information about it.

We had blinis from Russia, popcorn from the US, both Finnish and Swedish liquorice, Turkish sour cherry juice and rose petal jam on traditional bread, chocolate treats from a range of countries, interesting green jellies (I really should have written down what they were), spiced chickpeas with dukkah from Egypt, Danish pastries, a lovely tricolour Italian selection of cheese, tomatoes and olives – and lots of lively discussion.

We also discussed the forthcoming change of membership rules and what, if anything, we can do to support WI in fighting the changes imposed on us.

Our February meeting is a bit of taste tourism. We all pulled pieces of paper from a metaphorical hat, each with a European country name on it, and the idea is to bring an item of food (not too much, as we’ll all be bringing food) or drink associated with that country to the next meeting, and perhaps a snippet of information about it. (And you might need something to take some food home in.)

If you are coming to the next meeting and missed January, please feel free to choose a country yourself – anywhere outside geographical Europe (probably) will not have already been picked.
