N1 Women's Institute

N1 Women's Institute N1 Islington Women's Institute. The WI is the largest voluntary women’s organisation in the UK. We love all things food, drink and craft.

N1 Women's Institute meets on the last Tuesday of the month at St James' Hall on the corner of Packington St and Prebend St N1 near Angel. The main purposes of the Women’s Institute organisation are to enable women who are interested in issues associated with modern life, including arts, crafts and sciences, to improve and develop conditions of their lives, to advance their education in citizenship, in public questions both national and international, in music, drama and other cultural subjects and in all branches of agriculture, handicrafts, home economics, health and social welfare. Anyone who identifies as a woman may join, no matter what their views on religion or politics may be. The organisation is non-sectarian and non-party political. This does not prevent Women’s Institutes from concerning themselves with matters of political and religious significance.

We have a big treat for WI members in September – an evening with Dame Anne Evans, who lives locally but is famed internationally as an operatic soprano. Retired now, the roles for which she’s most well known are that of Brünnhilde, a Wagnerian Valkyrie, and Isolde in Tristan and Isolde. We’ll be hearing about her life and travels, and see a recording of her singing. We’ll also be hearing from her husband about life married to a Valkyrie.

All WI members are welcome, but please let us know if you're coming, so we can make sure we have enough drinks.

Canal Day is coming!

The big day is Sunday 6 September, and we’ll be there setting up from about 10.00am, and open from 11.00am – 4.00pm. Anyone bringing cakes or cookies, feel free to bring them any time from 10.00, and please bring a list of ingredients (to help anyone with allergies).

It’s a fun day, with lots going on along and around the canal, so do come and visit the festival. If you’ve got time to help out on the stall for a while, it would be great as it allows us to take a break and rest our feet! It’s a nice sociable day out with more of us, too.

The stall will be on the towpath that runs along the north side of the canal, somewhere near Hanover School (we’re usually between the Danbury Street bridge and the Wharf Road bridge).

We have something slightly different for our August meeting – a visit by a physiotherapist who mainly deals with more mature adults helping with ease of movement. Crystal can tell us what we need to know to keep on moving as we get older.

Antarctica is a fascinating place, quite apart from the penguins, so it should be a very interesting evening.

April is our annual meeting, where we will be welcoming Yvette to oversee the formal elements. We will be reporting back on the year and voting in the committee for the year ahead – with refreshments and a social to follow.

We had photos of places, of birds, of objects, all representing events in our lives or special trips.
