An inspiring morning at the House of Lords yesterday exploring the power of phonics to transform children’s reading.

We heard how England’s reading revolution helped increase phonics screening pass rates from 58% in 2012 to over 75% today—and how the Jolly Phonics approach is now being implemented at scale across Kano State, Nigeria, in partnership with government.

The research was especially exciting: children taught by Jolly Phonics-trained teachers achieved the strongest results, with evidence that decoding skills can transfer between Hausa and English. 🌍

A powerful reminder of what’s possible when evidence, teacher training and government leadership come together.

Thank you for allowing us to be part of this. The conversation comes at an important time as we reflect on our own foundational learning work in Ethiopia.

We've got mail! 🇪🇹

The shared learning activities are in from Ethiopia for this years' school link exchange. The theme is traditional and favourite foods.

After a spring term lesson resource on Ethiopian food, the UK & US schools will now be receiving exciting packs of drawings and messages from their Ethiopian link school.

They will then do the same activity, sharing drawings and messages on their favourite and traditional foods for the students in Ethiopia to enjoy!

Happy New Year to all our supporters! 🎊

As many of us wind down for Christmas, the new school year is well underway for the preschool children of Kebele 20 where our classroom project is now complete!

This project was truly a collaboration, beginning with your generous donations to our Christmas campaign, and building through partnership. The project is testament to our principle of doing things well, rather than just doing them quickly. From an original plan for three new traditional construction classrooms, we have now built four new concrete classrooms, with furniture, resources and a playground appropriate for kindergarten children.

Consultations with the children and teachers led to adaptations to decoration, furnishing and resourcing that mean the community truly feel ownership. The impact of the project is evident in the numbers of new children enrolling at the start of this year - 240 children are attending the pre-school - double the number last year!

Together, we have built a bright, safe and inspiring space for children to begin their education, that will last for generations.

You can read more about the project on our blog: https://twlethiopia.org/blog/2025/12/08/building-bright-beginnings-an-update-from-kebele-20-kindergarten/

Thanks to our supporters, Amhara Development Association- ADA Head office, Ethiopiaid, Children’s Voices in Action - by The Seaver Foundation and The Chamber of Us for coming together to make this project possible.

We have just finished training more than 2,400 teachers in Ethiopia - double our previous reach!

14 trainers have given incredible energy over seven weeks to reach a record number of teachers in Amhara and Oromia this year. The training empowers teachers to teach English using phonics in a fun and engaging way using jolly phonics.

Those teachers will now take their learning & materials back to the classroom - reaching around 144,000 children. Last year we saw literacy improve by 78 percentage points for children taught by trained teachers by the end of their first year of English education.

This is truly a collaborative effort, and we thank Oromia Education Bureau, Amhara Education Bureau, jolly phonics, Barzilai Foundation Trust, our incredible trainers, staff, and of course - education's greatest asset - the teachers themselves, for making it possible!

£11,040 raised for children at Delo School!

We received more donations than ever this year and appreciate every single one of them. Thank you to everyone who donated, shared and believed in this project!

With these funds we’ll be able to begin work at Delo Primary School immediately: building safe, gender-separated toilets, installing handwashing stations and training the staff so that pupils benefit now and long into the future. We will do everything we can to deliver the full project for the children of Delo School.

From all of us at Together We Learn - thank you! 🌟

Gender-separated toilets in school = dignity and attendance for girls.

With the right support, girls are more than twice as likely to attend lessons during their period. (PLOS, 2025)

We are at 54% of our Christmas campagin target. We need to raise £2,750 in donations before midday Tuesday to secure the full match funding and unlock the £12,000.
