Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) affects two children in every average UK classroom, yet an alarming lack of awareness means many children, young people and adults aren’t being heard – and they’re not getting the help they need.

And when people with DLD aren’t supported, we miss out on their ideas, skills and talents. It's time to change this and raise our .

Children in mainstream schools cannot afford to be overlooked. They must have access to specialist speech and language support as soon as they need it, and we have ideas that could help ensure every child thrives.

“SEND reform is totally dependent on the quality of the implementation of the positive ideas set out by the government like Experts at Hand, inclusion bases and teacher training. These materials are far from a reassuring start on this journey.

“Many teachers will be disappointed that these training materials aren’t giving them practical strategies that they can actually use to improve children’s outcomes, which is what we all want to see.” - Neil Maslen, Director of Education 👏

The government has released the first wave of SEND training materials, and we're disappointed to say the least. Despite Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) affecting 1.3 million children and young people across England, it is not mentioned in the materials. SEND Reform cannot be successful without a major initiative to improve knowledge of DLD.
