Designing a lasting memorial to recognise Britain’s contribution to ending the global slave trade.

A new song titled The West Africa Squadron, written by British songwriter Alex Hart, has gained attention for shedding light on the little-known story of the British Royal Navy's efforts to combat the transatlantic slave trade.

The song, shared on Hart's YouTube channel, combines historical storytelling with a rousing style to honour the West Africa Squadron, a unit established in 1808 that played a crucial role in enforcing Britain's abolition of the slave trade.

We have recently updated our website to feature a new "Education" section, which outlines our commitment to ongoing campaigning for the inclusion of the study of the history of the West Africa Squadron within the National Curriculum in the United Kingdom.

Ultimately, we want to do everything we can to ensure that the sterling efforts and heroic sacrifices made by the Royal Navy between 1807-1867 are remembered by future generations.

We are thrilled to share the exciting news that our campaign to build a memorial to the brave members of the West Africa Squadron has achieved an important milestone!

To date, we have received £50,000 from our kind donors, including a fantastic gift of £25,000 from the Right Honourable Lord Ashcroft.

This translates to 71% of our target of £70,000 to complete the project, and we couldn't have done it without your fantastic input so far!

The maquette of the proposed memorial to the men who lost their lives serving in the West Africa Squadron was unveiled yesterday by the Right Honourable Penny Mordaunt, leader of the House of Commons.

The ceremony took place in her office in Parliament and was witnessed by a number of MP's including James Gray, MP for North Wiltshire, whose distant relative Captain William Tucker lost his life serving in the squadron.

Many MP's offered their support and welcomed the scheme as it highlighted Britain's role in ending the Atlantic slave trade, a fact that is not widely known and which many MP's believe should be added to the school history curriculum.

We've been busy updating the West Africa Squadron Memorial Fund website, and have added a new resource covering Britain's role in the abolition of the slave trade on the "History" page.

There is also an "In the press" section to showcase some of the coverage the project has received in UK and international press and media outlets.

We've just returned from a fantastic visit to the studio of the supremely-talented Vincent Gray, the sculptor working his magic on the memorial to the courageous members of the Royal Navy's West Africa Squadron.

While there, we marvelled at the maquette of the statue he has prepared in advance of it being unveiled at the House of Commons on Tuesday, January 30th, 2024, by The Rt. Hon. Penny Mordaunt MP, Leader of the House of Commons and MP for Portsmouth North.

This is a hugely exciting leap forward for our project!
