Satellite Foundation

Satellite Foundation A NFP connecting children & young people who have a family member with mental health challenges.

Established in 2009 in Melbourne, Satellite Foundation has evolved from over 25 years of work by many who have recognised the challenges facing families where a parent or carer experiences challenges to their mental health, including mental illness. We believe children and young people are the changemakers of the future and have enormous potential to positively influence and shape the way our soci

ety functions. Mental health challenges can have an impact on all members of the family, and this often goes unrecognised. Satellite takes a whole-of-family approach to support and sustain connections between children, their parent/s or primary caregivers and the wider community. At Satellite, we aim to nurture children and young people to realise their full potential and become more resilient to the challenges of living within a family facing mental illness or mental health challenges. Satellite puts children, young people and their lived experience at the heart of everything we do. Together we build awareness and provide a safe, inclusive space that enhances the health, wellbeing and connectedness of children, young people and their families. Satellite offers peer support in a range of in-person and online programs, workshops, activities and projects that are centred on connection. We use a combination of creativity and lived experience to work through challenges faced in the areas of mental illness, mental health challenges and social and emotional wellbeing. We work in partnership with young people and their families, available services, practitioners, similar organisations, and the wider community.

Today marks the beginning of Pride Month 🌈, a time dedicated to celebrating LGBTIQA+ people and their history. It’s an opportunity to recognise and honour diversity in sexuality and identity, while continuing to promote equal rights for everyone.

We recognise the importance of creating spaces where young LGBTIQA+ people feel safe, included and supported.

At Satellite, we are committed to making sure everyone feels welcome.

Reconciliation Week is here, and we take time to reflect on its significance.

Each year, from 27 May to 3 June, these dates mark two significant milestones in the reconciliation journey: the 1967 referendum and the High Court Mabo decision.

This year’s theme, All In, invites all Australians to come together and commit to reconciliation every day.

National Sorry Day is a time to acknowledge the strength of Stolen Generations Survivors and the ongoing impacts of these histories.

It is an opportunity to pause, reflect and consider how we listen to and learn from the experiences of First Nations peoples, today and into the future.

Today is World Schizophrenia Awareness Day.

Justin Heazlewood has long been an important voice in Satellite’s story, helping shine a light on the experiences of young people growing up alongside family mental health challenges.

In this powerful reflection, Justin draws on his personal experience growing up caring for his mother, sharing an honest and deeply human perspective on schizophrenia, stigma, recovery and the compassion people living with schizophrenia deserve.

His words are a reminder that greater understanding builds empathy, and empathy helps break down stigma.

Before Satellite, every service Dee encountered felt heavy and clinical.

Satellite was different.

“Re-learning creativity, fun and play was so important,” Dee shares. “As young carers, things tend to be so serious most of the time.”
