Behind every label is a worker 🫶

It’s easy to forget in a world of fast fashion, micro-trends, and overconsumption that a real person with real skills is behind every garment we wear. When we talk about handmade, we’re talking about the labour needed to create a quality piece from beginning to end.

What we wear is personal. It takes many hands to create just one item of clothing. That’s why at Ethical Clothing Australia we advocate for the rights of all workers within the local Textile, Clothing and Footwear (TCF) industry to ensure they’re protected, respected, and paid fairly according to Australian workplace laws.

Today marks the first day of Refugee Week (14-20 June), an important week to raise awareness and celebrate the positive contributions of refugees to the fabric of Australia. This year's theme is ‘A Million Stories’ – marking the one million permanent humanitarian visas Australia has granted since 1947.

This week is a call for us to pause and reflect. Behind one million humanitarian visas are one million individual stories – each one unique, powerful and woven into the fabric of the Australia we call home.

To find out more, follow the Refugee Council of Australia (RCOA) and support accredited businesses like The Social Outfit, The Social Studio, Sisterworks Inc and Assembled-Threads who provide meaningful employment to those from refugee, migrant and asylum-seeker backgrounds.

Shopping for ethical fashion but don't know where to start? We get it. Greenwashing is a huge problem in the fashion space. Many brands claim to be 'ethical' but don't have the evidence to back it up.

That's why accreditation with Ethical Clothing Australia is so important. Accreditation certifies that a business has undertaken an in-person audit to ensure compliance with the relevant Australian workplace laws. When you see our trademark ‘e’ on swing tags, you can shop with confidence, knowing that the people who have made your clothes are protected, respected and paid fairly.
