It's Labour Day in the ACT, New South Wales and South Australia today. Did you know the movement for the eight-hour working day actually started in Victoria?

On the 21st of April 1856, a group of stonemasons stopped their work at the new University of Melbourne due to poor working conditions which saw them work over ten hours per day. Fed up, they went on strike and marched to Parliament House to demand for better and fair working conditions. As a result, workers employed at public works were given eight-hour work days with the same pay – a momentous victory for workers' rights in Victoria which inspired labour movements across Australia and the world!

Labour Day (also known as May Day in Queensland and the Northern Territory) is a day to celebrate the achievements of past labour movements who fought so hard for decent and equitable working conditions, but to also highlight that there’s still a lot of work to be done. At Ethical Clothing Australia, we continue to work alongside union, business and industry to ensure the people who make our clothes are protected, respected and paid fairly according to Australian workplace laws.

What does local and ethical manufacturing look like in practice? 🤩

As part of Ethical Clothing Australia Week 2026, Next State hosted Tea Towel Studio Sessions at its Thornbury studio, giving attendees a behind-the-scenes look at how their products are made. And the fun part? Guests were able to watch the team transform their artwork into a beautifully finished tea towel, printed and sewn on-site.

A big and heartfelt thank you to everyone who joined us for Ethical Clothing Australia Week 2026. The only event of its kind in Australia dedicated to the skilled workers within our local and ethical TCF industry – this year’s theme zeroed in on a simple but powerful idea: all clothing is handmade 🪡

Behind every finished item is a person, and often many people. Whether it’s clothing, workwear, PPE or footwear, every TCF product depends on a chain of human effort. Recognising the people behind that chain, not just the finished product, is at the heart of ethical manufacturing.

Special mention goes to the skilled workers who make up our ethical TCF industry, our accredited businesses, TFTU, industry partners, government and supporters.

We were grateful to receive a message of support from Senator the Hon Tim Ayres, Minister for Industry and Innovation and Minister for Science. A huge thank you to everyone who packed the room on Friday 18 September for Made By Queensland, a thought-provoking conversation on how ethical, responsible procurement can drive local manufacturing and build a truly sustainable future for our textile, clothing and footwear industry.

It was wonderful to see accredited businesses, procurement managers, industry and government officials come together to hear from our experienced panel. A special mention to our panellists, Fiona David (Fair Futures), Mellissa Pashen (Game Clothing), Jenny Kruschel (TFTU) and Laura Giassetti (Australian Catholic Anti-slavery Network) for their time, knowledge and fantastic insights. It was great to hear what responsible procurement looks like in practice, the role accreditation can play in reducing labour and modern slavery risks, and how buying locally and ethically can deliver value beyond the immediate purchase.
