Werribee Gorge is one of the most popular day hikes in Melbourne, and our groups of adventurous hikers discovered why on a recent trip!
We arrived at Meikles Picnic Area with the park looking lush from spring rains, birds chirping in the trees, and a happy orchestra of frogs singing from the creek. The first challenge of the day was a steep climb up to the ridgeline - it was hard and sweaty work, but everyone kept up their good spirits and cheered each other on.
Once at the top we had a stunning view of the gorge from the Western lookout. We then dropped steeply into the gorge, and pretty soon we were walking along Werribee Creek with towering views of rock cliffs and boulders surrounding both sides of the river. This is where the fun began - we navigated narrow rock ledges, climbed up knobbly boulders, balanced ourselves on rock bridges right above the water line, and used our arm muscles on the cable traverse section.
Throughout the walk we were constantly in awe of the majesty of the gorge and rock formations in every corner we turned. It was a very challenging hike, but the group did an awesome job supporting each other through it all. Good work everyone! ⛰️🏞️
