Visit Sherry Quiambao's solo exhibition 'Slow Ceremony', on show until the 24th of October.

Sherry Quiambao is an artist based in Boorloo/Perth whose practice moves between photography, moving image, sculpture and installation.

Her work often uses familiar objects, domestic spaces and constructed images, drawing on personal and cultural memory. She is interested in how everyday objects and gestures can hold ideas about home, aspiration and belonging.

'Slow Ceremony' brings together moving image, photography, sound and sculpture. Developed through a residency in Makassar, South Sulawesi, the work centres on ordinary plastic objects and repeated actions drawn from everyday life, restaging them through photography, video and installation.

Visit 'Cost Benefit', a group show curated by Emeline Robinson-Shaw on show in Gallery 1 until the 24th of October.

Emeline Robinson-Shaw brings together artists Visaya Hoffie, Mythra Schwartz, Loretta Riach, Isabella Darcy, and Grace Culley in an ambitious, critical exhibition which actively gives back to those who maintain and motor Bus Projects as artist-run-initiative.

The rather specific sum of $237.96 represents a fifth of what volunteers would receive to invigilate the exhibition if they were paid the minimum wage of a casual employee. If all works sell at their reserve price of $237.96, volunteers get paid for the exhibition’s four-week run – meaning the value of the exhibition’s production realises the value of its “reproduction” within opening hours. For any works which exceed their reserve, artists will pocket the surplus, thereby turning a profit greater than the “value” of their artistic labour.

Opening event this Wednesday, September 30 6-8pm

This month at Bus Projects, Emmy Robinson-Shaw presents an ambitious group project in Gallery 1.

'Cost-Benefit' is a group exhibition featuring artists working with painting and expanded painting. This exhibition takes a conceptual approach to curation. Using an unconventional funding model, it explores the productive and reproductive value of artwork within a local arts economy defined by volunteerism, government funding deficits, and unregulated payment standards for artists.

Curator Emmy Robinson-Shaw invites five artists to quantify the value of their labour through five newly commissioned works. On closing night, all new works will go live on a silent auction, presenting a fundraising model which redirects sales towards paying volunteers and exhibition staff. By linking artistic production, care work, and collective support, the project exposes the economics of cultural labour while proposing tangible ways to redistribute value.

Opening event this Wednesday, September 30 6-8pm

This month at Bus Projects, Sherry Quiambao’s solo exhibition ‘Slow Ceremony’.

‘Slow Ceremony’ combines dynamic video, photography, sound and object work. The creation stems from the artist’s experiences in Makassar, South Sulawesi. Through choreographed movements, constructed images, and brightly colored plastic objects, Quiambao explores how daily behaviors and materials transform between practicality, repetition, adaptation and ritual.

Daily actions such as washing, carrying, holding and tending are slowed down, choreographed and reorganized, becoming about persistence and adaptation of the body. Throughout the exhibition, familiar materials are placed in different contexts and reconstituted, allowing ordinary objects and behaviors to constantly shift between daily use and ritual.

“I need to get up there. I shut my eyes and call to him with my mind. My protector, my wise one. I see his black snout first peering over the edge of the opening, then a massive paw, almost bigger than me. He makes his way down to me with graceful agility. He's brought me something. A hooded cloak, a miniature of his own image. My snout, his snout, together. I climb on his back and grab his soft fur in my hands, and we go through the opening, into the sun.”

Bus Projects invites artists, curators, and collectives to submit proposals for our 2027 Artistic Program. We are seeking creative practices which communicate current positionality and intersectional thinking for exhibitions, public programs, performances, and interdisciplinary formats. Experimental and pivotal ideas across all creative disciplines are encouraged to apply.

Exhibiting at Bus Projects is free. We provide artist fees in line with NAVA standards, as well as install and curatorial support.

Thank you everyone for joining us for our film screening, Cặn Cảnh, last Saturday. It was such a pleasure to have the opportunity to speak with four of the filmmakers, Lêna Bùi, Đặng Thảo Nguyên, cát nguyên, and Nguyễn Trung Nghĩa, and hear more about the stories behind their films and their working processes.

There’s something really special about coming together in person, sitting quietly alongside one another as we watch the films, bursting into laughter at unexpected moments, and then seeing all the food disappear by the end of the afternoon.

A big thank you to Cinema Con Nhà Nghèo for this wonderful collaboration and for curating such a thoughtful and meaningful selection of films. We’re so grateful to have shared this afternoon with you all.

And a very special thank you to Kyle Canavan, who worked so hard to transform the space and make it feel completely different for the screening even though it was only a one-day event.

This month in Gallery 1 is Emily Greenwood's solo exhibition, ‘Trolley Herder Project’.

Emily Greenwood's 'Trolley Herder Project' maps the unseen labour and extended movements of retail workers tasked with collecting and re-arranging discarded shopping trolleys. Memory and institutional encounter underpin three video works, each documenting a distinct act of trolley herding as they play simultaneously across the space. The formative Ashfield Mall performance (2022), the extended journey between Broadway Shopping Centre and Verge Gallery (2024), and a newly conceived return to the streets of Brunswick will be brought to the walls of gallery one over the next three months, quietly celebrating the gentle choreography of retail work. A found trolley and a single speaker anchor the installation, extending the videos into sculptural presence and sonic atmosphere.
