Last Friday, the Building & Construction Foundation had the privilege of visiting Hester Hornbrook Academy to speak with a group of young women about pathways into the building and construction industry.

The session focused on VET pathways, skilled trades, apprenticeships, and the practical steps young people can take if they are interested in exploring a future in construction.

We were grateful to be joined by Christina, a carpentry apprentice, and Emma, an electrical apprentice, who generously shared their own journeys, spoke honestly about their experiences as women in trades, and answered thoughtful questions from the students.

Following the session, we received beautiful feedback from Hester Hornbrook Academy that the students “got a lot out of it”, with one student sharing that hearing Christina speak helped solidify her pathway. In her words:

“When I listened to Christina talk, it was like she was saying my thoughts out loud about what I picture my career to be. That’s exactly what I want in my future.”

That reflection captures exactly why these opportunities matter.

For many young people, the first step is simply seeing that a pathway exists, and hearing from someone who has walked it. When students can meet apprentices and tradespeople, ask honest questions, and understand what a career in construction could look like, the possibility becomes real.

At the Building & Construction Foundation, we are committed to working with schools, community organisations and industry partners to create tailored opportunities that open doors for students and young people facing barriers. These sessions are practical, honest and responsive to the needs of each cohort, and thanks to the support of Incolink, we are able to continue delivering this important school outreach and creating meaningful opportunities for young people considering a future in construction.

Thank you to Hester Hornbrook Academy for welcoming us and for creating space for these important conversations.

If your school or organisation works with young people who could benefit from learning more about pathways into construction, we would love to hear from you.

After completing her Cert II in Electrotechnology, Ailish was looking for an opportunity to begin her career within the electrical industry. Through the Building Women’s Careers (BWC) Program, which is funded by the Department of Employment & Workplace Relations and delivered in partnership with Incolink Ailish was identified as someone who would benefit from additional support to help transition into employment and overcome some of the barriers associated with entering the trades as a mature age female apprentice.

We reached out to our trusted Trade Network to help identify an opportunity aligned with Ailish’s goals within the electrical industry. Through this connection, Ailish successfully secured a first-year electrical apprenticeship with Harris HMC. We also assisted with the extra training and tools needed to help her confidently transition into the workforce and begin her career in the trades.

Recently, we caught up with Ailish to see how she has been progressing, and she shared:

“The support that I have received from the Building & Construction Foundation has been invaluable and with their assistance the industry became far more accessible to me. I feel incredibly fortunate to be in the position I am now and look forward to seeing where a career in the trades will take me.”

Nick Crossett, Operations Manager at Harris HMC, also shared his experience working with Ailish:

“Working with the Building and Construction Foundation has been a great experience, and it’s been fantastic to see the support they’ve provided Ailish to get her start in the industry. We consider ourselves lucky to have been connected with her - the passion, drive, and enthusiasm she brings is exactly what we look for in a first-year apprentice, and she’s fit into the team extremely well.

We are proud to support pathways for women entering skilled trades and to help create a more diverse and sustainable future workforce within the construction industry.

This National Volunteer Week, we’re celebrating the people behind the impact.

Behind every Foundation initiative, event, program and opportunity is a generous community of people who give their time, skills, services, networks and support to help make our work possible.

Volunteering with the Building & Construction Foundation takes many forms, mentoring a participant, offering work experience, hosting a site visit, sharing industry knowledge, supporting an event, donating professional services, making an introduction, or helping open a door for someone facing barriers.

To every board member, mentor, volunteer, industry connector, partner, event supporter, service provider and behind-the-scenes contributor who backs our work, thank you.

Your generosity helps us create meaningful opportunities for people facing financial hardship and other barriers, while building a more inclusive, connected and resilient construction industry.

Together, we are building a community doing good.

If you or your business would like to get involved, offer support or join our Trade Network, we’d love to hear from you.
