This Refugee Week, we recognise the many stories, journeys and contributions that shape our communities, our workplaces and our country.

At the Building & Construction Foundation, we have the privilege of supporting people from many different backgrounds to access education, training and employment pathways in building and construction.

Many of the people we support are migrants, refugees, or the children of migrants. They bring with them resilience, determination, skill, perspective and hope.

Their contribution to our industry is real. It strengthens workplaces, supports families and helps build a more inclusive and future-ready construction sector.

Refugee Week is an important reminder that behind every pathway is a person, a story and a future worth investing in.

Multiculturalism is not separate from Australian identity. It is central to it.

What a night!

On the evening of Saturday 13 June, 500 people from across the building and construction industry came together for our 2026 Gala, Building A Community Doing Good.

It was a special evening, and a powerful reminder of what is possible when the building and construction industry comes together with generosity, heart, and purpose.

The night brought together people from across the industry to celebrate the work of the Foundation, recognise the partners and supporters who make it possible, and honour the 2026 Metricon Mario Biasin Legacy Scholarship recipients, who's courage, talent and determination are exactly why this work matters.

These scholarships carry Mario’s name and legacy forward by creating real opportunities for people building their futures in our industry. We are deeply grateful to the Biasin and Crisfield families, and to Metricon for continuing to trust the Foundation with that legacy.

Because of the generosity of everyone in the room, we raised over $290,000 on the night to support barrier-removing scholarships, mentoring, youth pathway programs, women in construction programs, and practical support for people facing financial hardship and other barriers as they work towards a future in building and construction.

This is what Building A Community Doing Good looks like!

It looks like an industry showing up.
It looks like people opening doors.
It looks like scholarships, tools, transport, training, work experience, mentoring, and support.
It looks like a young person, apprentice, student, or career changer being given a fair chance to take their next step.

A sincere thank you to our 2026 Gala sponsors and supporters, and to every donor, table host, live and silent auction supporter, pledge donor, volunteer, partner, and guest who gave so generously, thank you.

The Mario Biasin Legacy Scholarships are open for applications, with four scholarships available in 2026 to support people building their future in the construction industry.

Established in honour of Mario Biasin, co-founder of Metricon, these scholarships continue his legacy by helping open doors for people who have the drive and potential to build a career in construction, but who may be facing financial hardship, social disadvantage or other barriers to education and career progression.

Last Friday, the Building & Construction Foundation had the privilege of visiting Hester Hornbrook Academy to speak with a group of young women about pathways into the building and construction industry.

The session focused on VET pathways, skilled trades, apprenticeships, and the practical steps young people can take if they are interested in exploring a future in construction.

We were grateful to be joined by Christina, a carpentry apprentice, and Emma, an electrical apprentice, who generously shared their own journeys, spoke honestly about their experiences as women in trades, and answered thoughtful questions from the students.

Following the session, we received beautiful feedback from Hester Hornbrook Academy that the students “got a lot out of it”, with one student sharing that hearing Christina speak helped solidify her pathway. In her words:

“When I listened to Christina talk, it was like she was saying my thoughts out loud about what I picture my career to be. That’s exactly what I want in my future.”

That reflection captures exactly why these opportunities matter.

For many young people, the first step is simply seeing that a pathway exists, and hearing from someone who has walked it. When students can meet apprentices and tradespeople, ask honest questions, and understand what a career in construction could look like, the possibility becomes real.

At the Building & Construction Foundation, we are committed to working with schools, community organisations and industry partners to create tailored opportunities that open doors for students and young people facing barriers. These sessions are practical, honest and responsive to the needs of each cohort, and thanks to the support of Incolink, we are able to continue delivering this important school outreach and creating meaningful opportunities for young people considering a future in construction.

Thank you to Hester Hornbrook Academy for welcoming us and for creating space for these important conversations.

If your school or organisation works with young people who could benefit from learning more about pathways into construction, we would love to hear from you.
