How are researchers exploring new ways to better understand Parkinson’s gait?

At the Bionics Institute, researchers are investigating whether gentle stimulation applied to the feet could help people with Parkinson's walk more easily.

Current treatments can help some Parkinson’s symptoms, but gait difficulties often remain challenging.

This ongoing research is helping build understanding of a potential new treatment approach designed to support mobility and stability💙

Did you catch the Bionics Institute on 7NEWS Australia on Saturday?

The story featured AFL great Neil Balme, who is helping shine a light on epilepsy and the urgent need for new treatment options.

Living with epilepsy himself, Neil is supporting our research into innovative electrical stimulation therapies offering new hope for people with drug-resistant epilepsy, where current medications don’t always work.

At the Bionics Institute, our researchers led by A/Prof Sophie Payne, are exploring how targeted stimulation could transform lives and reduce the impact of seizures.

What happens when passion for research meets the power to give back?

Anita Castan and Dr Oscar Murphy may have walked similar academic paths decades apart—but today, they’re united by a shared mission: to make the world a better place.

After witnessing the impact of Alzheimer’s disease firsthand, Anita chose to support the next generation of researchers. “I was keen to support Oscar in his research… if TMS could give people with Alzheimer’s their memory back, that would be wonderful,” she shares.

For Oscar, that support is transformative: “I just want to do research to improve quality of life… Anita’s gift allows me to do just that.”

Their story is a powerful reminder that backing research, at any stage, can help turn possibility into real-world impact.

"When we talk, we become an advocate with the cause, a believer of the cause and a credible spokesperson for the cause."🧠

After retiring from her consulting career, Omnia didn’t slow down—she found a new way to spark impact. What began as conversations on a cruise ship about a criminal case evolved into her now-captivating lectures on the “Mind of a Psychopath,” blending storytelling with neuroscience and real PET scan insights.

“After discussing the PET scans, I introduce the Bionics Institute and the work they are undertaking,” she shares. Connecting audiences from around the world to groundbreaking brain research happening right here in Melbourne.

Omnia’s story is a powerful reminder that raising awareness doesn’t always require a stage or campaign. Sometimes, it starts with a simple conversation. And those conversations can inspire curiosity, engagement, and meaningful support for life-changing research.
