The Gideons International Australia

The Gideons International Australia Gideons International is an evangelical Christian association founded 1899 in Janesville, Wisconsin. These copies are printed in over 100 languages.

For those on mission to spread the Gospel, The Gideons International in Australia is an evangelical association that equips and mobilises Christian business and professional men, along with their wives, to share God’s Word, winning others for Christ. The Gideons' primary activity is distributing copies of the Bible free of charge. This Bible distribution is a global enterprise taking place in 200

countries, territories and possessions. The association's members focus on distributing complete Bibles, New Testaments, or portions thereof. The association is most widely known for its Scriptures placed in hotel and motel rooms. The Gideons also distribute to hospitals and other medical offices, schools and colleges as well as jails and prisons. The association takes its name from the Biblical figure Gideon, depicted in Judges 6. The Gideons International has an international presence. Its members distribute Scriptures in many countries to people who cannot afford to purchase Scriptures on their own. Gideons began distributing free Bibles, the endeavor for which they are chiefly known, in 1908, when the first Bibles were placed in the rooms of the Superior Hotel in Superior, Montana. Members of The Gideons International currently distribute over 80 million Scriptures annually, and the numbers are growing, especially in places like Brazil, India, and Asia. On average, more than two copies of the Bible are distributed per second through Gideons International.[1] In late April of 2015, Gideons distributed their historic two billionth Scripture. The distribution of the first one billion Bibles and New Testaments by Gideon members spanned 93 years (1908 to 2001). The second billion was attained in less than 14 years (2002 to 2015). [2]

The headquarters of Gideons International is in Nashville, Tennessee. The head office for Gideons International in Australia is located in Canberra.

"After hitting rock bottom, nothing seemed enjoyable to Nathan anymore. Family and friends felt distant, and the addiction he turned to could not fill the emptiness he carried. Struggling with ongoing health issues, he felt lost and without hope. Though he had received a New Testament from the Gideons in school and had always believed God existed, he had never truly prayed for help. When he finally cried out to God, he experienced improvements in his health and freedom from addiction. Today, the things that once attracted him seem empty compared to the love he has found in Jesus Christ, his Saviour."

“I met with a man in his late 30s to whom I had previously given a New Testament. We caught up again over coffee, and he was eager to understand how Christianity differs from other religions.

I asked him to read John 3:16, and we spoke about God’s love - that unlike other religions, God is presented as loving, and because of that love, He gave His Son so that we might receive eternal life as a gift.

We also discussed how many religions focus on earning our way to God, but this is something we could never achieve, so God, in His grace, has provided a way for us to receive eternal life as a free gift. I then asked him to read Romans 6:23. After reading it, he looked up and said, ‘eternal life is a free gift,’ then read it again, repeating, ‘it is a free gift.’

What a joy to see his response to the Word of God.”

How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching?

“I recently found myself in a new pathology collection centre.
The waiting room didn’t have a skerrick of reading material… except for a Gideons Bible, placed upright and clearly visible on the windowsill.
I loved seeing this! Thank you to The Gideons for your faithful work in sharing the Word.”

But whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.

"During a hospital stay, a member became part of an unexpected moment of encouragement.
In a nearby emergency bay, a minister sat with his unwell wife. While there, he overheard the member sharing the gospel with a nurse and offering a New Testament.
He later shared how deeply encouraged he was to hear someone witnessing, even while they themselves were in need of care.
He went on to say that years earlier; while staying in a hotel for work, he found a Bible in a drawer. As he read the Gospel of Mark, the Word was made clear to him.
Now, he encourages others to bear witness wherever and whenever they can, because no matter where we are, God’s Word remains true and is meant to be shared."

"The Gideons in New Zealand received a letter from a woman in Queensland some time ago, thanking them. She had visited New Zealand the Christmas before last and stayed the week leading up to Christmas. At the time, she was estranged from her family and going through many struggles. She had decided she was going to end her life.
There is a long jetty near where she was staying, and because she couldn’t swim, she planned to walk to the end after dark and jump off. She believed this would be a simple way to end everything. One evening, around 7 or 8 pm, she walked out to the end of the jetty and waited for it to get dark.
Being from Queensland, she hadn’t realised how late the sun sets on the South Island at that time of year. The sun wasn’t setting anytime soon.
After waiting an hour or two and noticing the sun was still high, she decided to return to her hotel room to rest. She thought she could go back later once it was dark.
Back in her room, she laid down and noticed a Bible at eye level. She thought there was no harm in taking a look. As she began to read, something changed. In those pages, she found Jesus. In that moment, she turned away from ending her life.
She later returned to Queensland, where she was reunited with her family. She is now living in faith and fellowship. Her life was saved, both physically and spiritually.
She wrote to thank the Gideons for placing that Bible in her hotel room."
