🌺 THE POPPY — A SYMBOL OF REMEMBRANCE & SERVICE 🌺
August’s birth flower, the poppy, carries a message especially meaningful to The American Legion Auxiliary. While the poppy can symbolize peace, rest, dreams, and resilience, for the American Legion Family it holds an even deeper meaning — remembrance and sacrifice.
Following World War I, the red poppy became a lasting symbol honoring the men and women who served and sacrificed for our country. Inspired by the poppies that grew on the battlefields of Europe and the famous poem “In Flanders Fields,” the American Legion Auxiliary adopted the poppy as its memorial flower in 1921.
For more than a century, Auxiliary members have proudly shared poppies in communities across the nation. These small red flowers remind us to:
🇺🇸 Honor those who gave their lives in service to our country
❤️ Remember all who have worn our nation’s uniform
🌺 Support veterans, active-duty military members, and their families
🤝 Continue serving in their honor
One of the most important traditions associated with the Auxiliary’s poppy program is Poppy Day, observed each year on the Friday before Memorial Day. Donations received through poppy distribution are used exclusively to support veterans, active-duty servicemembers, and their families.
So when you see a red poppy, remember that it represents much more than a beautiful flower.
It represents sacrifice. It represents service. It represents remembrance.
