On 9/15, the Senate blocked passage of the CLARITY Act, the cryptocurrency bill. Over the past few months, Common Cause and our coalition partners have repeatedly opposed the lack of strong ethics safeguards in this bill 👉 as recently as this. While we certainly need a regulatory framework for crypto, this bill didn't go far enough in preventing presidents from benefiting from crypto -- which has become Trump's largest vector for self-enrichment. Public officials who write or enforce the rules for crypto shouldn’t be allowed to cash in on it.

This win is also an example of ethics/democracy groups teaming up with law enforcement and national security groups. We were able to speak with one voice about the need for Congress to address crypto -- both as a vehicle for presidential self-enrichment AND as a vehicle for other forms of crime (as scammers, drug cartels, foreign kleptocrats, terrorist financiers, and sanctions evaders use crypto to move and hide their money). It was exciting to be part of such a cross-ideological alliance in support of anti-corruption, and we'll continue building on it for the future!

Noncitizen voting is extremely rare. States R req to conduct voter roll list maintenance under fed law. States already have processes to ID any noncitizens who accidentally make it onto voter rolls YET 👇🏼

Critics have said the data could lead to U.S. citizens being kicked off the voter rolls, but the justices noted the law prohibits broad voter purges in the weeks leading up to an election.

Early In-person voting starts on Oct. 16th in Minnesota. Office of the Office of the MN Secretary of State, Secretary Steve Simon, assures us that polling sites remain safe, neutral spaces despite concerns over potential federal immigration enforcement nearby.

ICE doesn’t want you to hold them accountable. As you know, we are all about , so we just sued to stop their abuse and constant violation of our great nation's Constitution - enough!

Since the president took office again, he’s been sending masked, armed federal agents into our communities to harass, terrorize, and kidnap our neighbors without any due process. Roughly 70% to 73% of individuals in ICE detention have NO criminal convictions in the USA.

For those detainees who do possess a U.S. criminal record, the largest share of convictions are for non-violent offenses, traffic infractions (DUI or driving without a license), or immigration-related violations.

IS THAT THE WORST OF THE WORST? Saying they are for propaganda does NOT make it a fact.

When observers record their heinous actions, these rogue agents have gone after them too – photographing or recording faces and license plates, putting them on domestic terrorist watchlists, and using that information to subject them to further harassment or legal action.

This is a classic authoritarian tactic – attacking and exploiting vulnerable communities and retaliating against anyone who attempts to demand accountability.

But here’s the good news: the First Amendment protects our right to observe government actions – and no 🔴🔵officer, agency, or president is above the Constitution.

That’s why Common Cause is suing to stop this illegal weaponized surveillance. The basis of our lawsuit is simple: this administration’s intimidation and retaliation against observers is a violation of our constitutional freedoms.

These tactics have no place in our Republic's democracy, and if left unchecked, will set a dangerous precedent in a moment when accountability is needed most.

We’ve been sounding the alarm since the administration’s first attacks on our communities. Earlier this year, we launched our campaign to fire Kristi Noem after she unleashed masked, armed agents to terrorize our communities in MN, then lied about it.

Together, we were successful, and we’ve kept up that fight – demanding Congress fight for greater accountability and funding cuts for ICE and this administration’s intimidation campaign.

Common Cause remains your advocate in Washington, D.C., Minnesota and wherever bad actors attempt to attack our constitutional freedoms.
