Swing’n’Country will be featuring Father’s Day on Saturday, June 20th. In the United States, Father’s Day has been the 3rd Sunday in June, beginning in Washington State in 1910. Father’s Day is celebrated in more than 110 countries around the world, although the date varies. KBOO’s Swing’n’Country, which airs three hours of country style music every Saturday morning on KBOO, will lead a modest celebration by playing a couple sets of songs honoring fathers in the second half of the show. Please join me Saturday morning from 6-9 am. We’ll have Live Chat starting at 7:30.

Also, there’s a week to go in KBOO’s summer fundraiser. If you'd like to support programming like Swing'n'Country, go to kboo.fm and click on the Red Donate Button to contribute. Thank you!

Garage Vinyl (Pops and Scratches Included!)

Returning to those thrilling days of yesteryear — Swing ’n’ Country fires up their analog turntable to present two-hours of mostly forgotten, well-worn LPs and 45 rpm records.

During Hours One and Three, you’ll hear carefully curated country music selections which have sat for years in a garage, inside a vintage orchard crate that Robert Parish acquired during the Nixon administration.

The non-digital festivities kick off around 6:05 a.m. with a full tracking of “5’LL Getcha Ten,” an album from the 1970’s “southern rock” band Cowboy. In the 8:00 a.m. hour, the turntable speed cranks up to 45 rpm, and features fast-spinning platters from David Allen Coe, The Seldom Scene, Jerry Jeff Walker, The Byrds, Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs, June Carter, The Blue Ridge Rangers, and Jose Feliciano.

Graham Parish and his sidekicks, taking a break to celebrate an important birthday and the end of the school year, appear via transcription (recorded June 2023) in Hour Two. Graham presents a country music soundtrack from several Quentin Tarantino films.

Charlie Rich was simultaneously one of the most critically acclaimed and most erratic country singers of post-World War II. Throughout his career, Rich willfully bended genres, fusing country, jazz, blues, gospel, rockabilly, and soul. Charlie had 45 country hits in a career that spanned nearly four decades. Instead of embracing the stardom those records brought him, Rich shunned it, retreating into semi-retirement. Tune in to KBOO.FM Saturday, 6:00am to 9:00 am, (PST) as we highlight Charlie Rich. .

Coming up this Saturday, May 23rd on KBOO Swing 'n' Country, I'll start things off with songs from the decades ('30s-'70s) and then move on to other musical topics (or non-topics, as the case may be). There's something for everyone so please tune in to hear what I chose for YOU.

Swing’n’Country is coming your way once again on Saturday, May 16th, filling the morning with country and western sounds from 6 til 9 on KBOO Portland 90.7 FM. There’s variety and balance in this show: 21 male and 18 female performers, along with 10 duets and 5 or 6 instrumentals. The program starts with Faron Young, Lefty Frizzell (A King Without A Queen) and Wanda Jackson (Just a Queen for a Day) exchange songs, and Roy & Dale end the show. The original version of Tennessee Stud from Jimmie Driftwood in 1959 ends the second hour. Along the way you can hear several Portland area bands and singers. See ya Saturday!

Another episode of Swing’n’Country is comin’ your way Saturday, April 18th from 6 till 9 am. The program features a pair of songs each from Cindy Walker, Marty Robbins and Johnny Paycheck. There are duets from George Jones & Tammy Wynette and Jessi Colter & Wayne Jennings, and music from a passel of country style singers, including Johnny Rodriguez, Rose Maddox, Bill Anderson and Dolly Parton, and many others, plus Arlo Guthrie’s City of New Orleans, by request.

The show opens with a song titled Last Call For Alcohol (by Commander Cody). It reminds me of Ketchikan, Alaska, in the 1970's. Last call was at 6 am, and the bars re-opened a couple hours later, mainly serving the pulp mill shift workers. In 1976 I was working a board shift on Ketchikan AM radio Saturdays at 6 am. Fifty years ago! I have a couple photos of the pulp mill from that era. It's no longer operational.

Please join me Saturday morning April 18th in the present day 2026 from 6-9 on KBOO 90.7 fm. Will
