🌲 Building community resilience across Northeastern Oregon!

Last week, EMO’s Community Resilience Team members Taylor Silvey and Peter Fargo traveled through five counties in Northeastern Oregon to help establish cross-sector Community Resilience Teams in Malheur, Umatilla, Union, Baker, and Wallowa Counties.

These teams bring together community members, local organizations, and partners from different sectors to identify local health concerns, explore solutions, and strengthen preparedness for extreme weather and seasonal emergencies. By building on local knowledge, relationships, and resources, each team will work toward practical, community-driven approaches to help their communities become healthier, safer, and more resilient.

We’re grateful to everyone who took the time to share their ideas, experiences, and hopes for their communities. We’re excited to see what we can accomplish together!

Since 1989, the US has observed National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. One in three women and one in four men will experience physical abuse by an intimate partner at some point in their lives. An average of 20 women experience violence from an intimate partner every minute.

This is why, at EMO we are proud that our program Slavic Oregon Social Services (SOSS) works tirelessly every to help people fleeing this violence craft new lives where they are safe. SOSS is one of the only culturally specific organizations in the country that prioritizes Slavic-speaking individuals, which can make all the difference for individuals facing the challenges of leaving an abusive relationship. We are so proud of their work.

For the final award we will be presenting at our annual gala we are honored to share that Jeff Hammarlund will be receiving the Justice Award.

Jeff Hammarlund is a senior fellow at PSU's Center for Public Service and a retired adjunct professor at the Hatfield School of Government. He taught graduate and professional development courses on energy and climate policy for 30 years. Jeff still chairs the selection committee of the Renewable Energy Scholarship Foundation, which supports students making major contributions toward a cleaner and more just world. His “superpower” is the thousands of former students who are now leading this vital transition.

Prior to entering academia, Jeff was as a guest scholar at the Brookings Institution and held senior positions with the U.S. Senate Energy Committee, U.S. Department of Energy, Southern California Edison, Public Power Council, and NW Energy Coalition.

Jeff spends most of his volunteer time working on clean energy, climate policy, and environmental justice issues. He supports such organizations as the DNC Climate Council, the Consolidated Oregon Indivisible Network, and the Oregon Coalition for an Environmental Rights Amendment. He has been a vibrant member of EMO’s Creation Justice Committee and its predecessors for over three decades.

Today we are proud and honored to present longtime NEFP volunteer, Sue Van Winkle, with the Humanitarian Award.

Throughout her life, Sue Van Winkle has been an active volunteer in various capacities at schools, direct service programs and her faith community. She has been a volunteer at EMO’s Northeast Emergency Food Program since 1999, the longest-serving volunteer at the food pantry!

A native Oregonian, Sue graduated from Portland State University with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics. During her career, she was a research assistant at the University of Oregon and a high school math teacher. She is an active member of Augustana Lutheran Church.

Sue and her husband, Lewis (aka Rip), have four children and seven grandchildren. When she is not volunteering, Sue spends her free time reading, cooking, traveling, singing and ballroom dancing.
