A season of firsts, growth, and a ton of reach. We have a lot to celebrate.

This quarter, BYkids:

✅ Named our first Film Development Fund winner
✅ Moved four new films into post-production
✅ Welcomed more educators into our professional development network
✅ Expanded our global reach through new partnerships

And the momentum keeps growing.

“I wanted to make this film because I wanted people to see, to hear and to know what we go through, what it’s caused by and how we overcome it”

AGAINST THE CURRENT is a 27-minute film shot and directed by 17-year-old Daunnette Moniz-Reyome, who was a senior at Walthill Public School on the Omaha Reservation. Daunnette documents life for herself, her family and her friends as they attempt to juggle modern society and Native American values and rituals.

Each BYkids film can be used for free in classrooms and comes with a standards-aligned School Guide and a Take Action resource to help teachers and students reflect further and find ways to get involved. Links in our Bio.

Each summer, filmmaker and educator Dan Gordon brings together young filmmakers for his annual documentary filmmaking camp.

This year, while mentoring an upcoming BYkids documentary that explores gun violence, Dan chose to center the camp around the same issue, inviting campers ages to explore one of the defining challenges facing their generation through documentary storytelling.

Over a period of two weeks, these young filmmakers met with community leaders, advocates and individuals whose lives have been shaped by gun violence. They asked thoughtful questions and discovered that meaningful storytelling begins long before the camera starts rolling.

We’re inspired by these young filmmakers, who remind us that curiosity, compassion and a willingness to listen are where every meaningful story begins.

In Bhutan, contentment has long been connected to a broader idea of well-being, one shaped by community, culture, balance and a metric the Bhutanese government calls Gross National Happiness.
