In FAITH’S WORLD, young filmmaker Faith Guilbault sits down with Mindy Scheier, founder of Runway of Dreams, to hear how Mindy’s son’s desire to wear jeans opened her eyes to the clothing challenges faced by millions of people with disabilities.

After hosting a BYkids screening of RETURN DATE: UNKNOWN at Fordham University, the media studies professor saw firsthand how differently audiences connect with a story when the person behind the camera is the one who lived it.

Yesterday, we announced this year’s FDF winner. Today, we’re sharing the story that started it all.

Check out the submission video that earned The Anh Dao the 2026 BYkids Film Development Fund award and introduced us to a documentary idea rooted in culture, climate and hope.

And we have a winner!

Congratulations to The Anh Dao, a 17-year-old young filmmaker from Vietnam, the first recipient of our inaugural Film Development Fund award!

“Unique.” “Powerful. “Original. “Beautifully told.” Those were just a few of the words the Film Development Fund jury used to describe our first FDF winner.

His documentary idea reimagines a centuries-old cultural tradition through the lens of climate change, exploring a sustainable alternative to oud, a component of incense used daily by millions of people in Vietnam. By connecting heritage, innovation and environmental stewardship, The offers a hopeful reminder that some of the most meaningful climate solutions are rooted in culture itself.

As this year’s winner, The Anh will receive a $1,500 grant sponsored by Pat Sapinsley, a recognized climate tech leader, and one-on-one mentorship with producer Susan Hoenig to further develop his documentary and bring this important story to life. We can’t wait to see where this story goes next!

We’ve been looking forward to sharing this news for weeks, and we’re thrilled to celebrate The Anh Dao and his inspiring vision.

Meet Xinyue D**g, a BYkids Film Development Fund finalist from North Carolina.

After volunteering at an Earth Day event, Xinyue noticed something unexpected: Paper surveys meant to collect feedback were left unused, scattered, or thrown away. The experience sparked a simple but powerful question—how can we rethink climate action if the systems we rely on create waste themselves?

Her documentary idea explores the gap between intention and reality, inviting us to look more closely at the everyday choices that shape our environmental impact.

Meet Ahmed Saleh Michika, a BYkids Film Development Fund finalist from Nigeria.

Growing up and working in communities affected by conflict and climate-driven displacement in North East Nigeria, Ahmed saw education become a lifeline for children forced from their homes.

His documentary idea explores the intersection of climate change, displacement and education through the stories of young people whose resilience continues to inspire hope.
