OUTsider

OUTsider OUTsider is a transmedia LGBTQ+ festival based in Austin, TX. WHAT'S IN A NAME? SUBMIT!

OUTsider is an Austin-based non-profit that celebrates the bold originality and creative nonconformity of the LGBTQI and Ally communities through the presentation of provocative, overlooked and out-of-the-box film, performances, music, writing and visual art. Through its annual festival and conference, OUTsider will bring together q***r artists, audiences and scholars from around the globe to exch

ange ideas, ignite conversations, transcend boundaries and experience new pleasures through artistic discovery. VALUES

Core values of OUTsider include:

• Creativity: Showcasing the diversity of talents and boundless imagination of the q***r film and arts communities.

• Collaboration: Inspiring conversations and connections between audiences, academics and artists across and in-between mediums.

• Community: Building and developing new forms of q***r togetherness through unprecedented and unique festival experiences.

• Cultural Enrichment: Enhancing understandings of q***r film and art through dynamic panel discussions, participatory workshops, informal mixers and scholarly presentations. OUTSIDE THE RULES

OUTsider breaks the traditional one-medium festival model through a multi-arts experience that bridges disciplines and activates the full power and brilliance of LGBTQIA creation and community. OUTsider rejects the common separation of artistic practice and appreciation through an intertwined festival and conference that encourages generative interactions between artists, scholars and the general public. The name “OUTsider” is a reference to q***rness, and specifically the act of refusing shame and living one’s life “out,” including living “out” as an ally of the LGBTQI communities. It also indicates the festival’s commitment to independent film and art: film and art produced outside of mainstream channels. In addition, “OUTsider” expresses our affinity with outsider sensibilities and outsider people: q***rs who take risks and dare to be different, as well as all marginalized folks who live and think outside the status quo. These various notions of the “OUTsider” inform the festival’s structure and content. Artists and academics, submit your work now!: bit.ly/OUTsider

OUTsider is excited to be partnering with to present a performative screening of the short film “Versos de porquería” / “Verses of Filth” by Naomi Rincón Galllardo. Naomi is a Mexican visual artist whose work is deeply rooted in q***r, feminist and decolonial methods and draws from pre-colonial epistemes.

In “Verses of Filth,” a bastardized Cihuateteo has become a scavenger/seeker digging up wasteland residues: body fragments and cultural debris. Along with a band of vultures, the scavanger recruits a brigade of arms that have been detached from their bodies and underworld creatures seeking touch, pleasure and revolt. In a Mesoamerican episteme, vultures connect the earth with the underworld by sticking their heads into dead bodies. These scavenger birds eat waste, decay and corpses and are considered purifying agents. The arms that rise from the grave insist on raising their decapitated fist in protest. Still, they also insist on seeking bonds of proximity with other arms, caressing, repairing, documenting, snapping, signing, and reading words that give an account of their existence.

Enrique Arriaga and Venese Medovich Alcantar will join Naomi for this special event at Fusebox to enhance the spoken word performance and projection by bringing electronic music and dance to the live performance.

Two opportunities to catch it at Fusebox Festival!
