OUTsider

OUTsider is an Austin-based non-profit that celebrates the bold originality and creative nonconformity of the LGBTQI and Ally communities through the presentation of provocative, overlooked and out-of-the-box film, performances, music, writing and visual art. Through its annual festival and conference, OUTsider will bring together q***r artists, audiences and scholars from around the globe to exchange ideas, ignite conversations, transcend boundaries and experience new pleasures through artistic discovery. OUTsider breaks the traditional one-medium festival model through a multi-arts experience that bridges disciplines and activates the full power and brilliance of LGBTQIA creation and community. OUTsider rejects the common separation of artistic practice and appreciation through an intertwined festival and conference that encourages generative interactions between artists, scholars and the general public. The name “OUTsider” is a reference to q***rness, and specifically the act of refusing shame and living one’s life “out,” including living “out” as an ally of the LGBTQI communities. It also indicates the festival’s commitment to independent film and art: film and art produced outside of mainstream channels. In addition, “OUTsider” expresses our affinity with outsider sensibilities and outsider people: q***rs who take risks and dare to be different, as well as all marginalized folks who live and think outside the status quo.
