Recently, Heal Los Angeles Foundation celebrated the end of another amazing program, and we couldn’t be more inspired by these young chefs and their families. We’re proud to continue our partnership with Heal LA for more than 8 years and counting! 💙

Each year, we host two virtual cooking class series, being 10 classes in English and 10 in Spanish, where students cook live alongside our chef instructors with support from their families at home. This year, our chef instructor, Chef Ocean, led the program guiding students through hands-on cooking experiences that brought families together through food, learning, and connection.

Thank you to Prince Jackson, and everyone who continues to make this partnership so meaningful year after year!

🍎 Teacher Appreciation Week continues, and today we’re celebrating two incredible Chef Instructors from our Miami market who are making a lasting impact in their classrooms and community!

Chef Isaura brings energy and engagement to every class, making even the most complex nutrition concepts easy to understand. She transforms detailed recipes into meaningful, accessible lessons that spark curiosity and inspire students to keep learning about food and nutrition long after class ends.

Chef Victoria has a special gift for connecting people through the rich historical roots of food. From youth to seniors, her classes build bridges between familiar ingredients and new recipes, encouraging healthy, approachable transformations that feel both natural and exciting.

We’re so grateful for the passion, creativity, and care these chefs bring to our Miami community every day. Thank you, Chef Isaura and Chef Victoria, for all that you do! 💙

Stay tuned as we continue highlighting more of our amazing educators this week!

Teacher Appreciation Week is here, and we’re excited to spend the week celebrating the incredible educators who make a difference every day!

Today, we’re proud to honor Chef Gabriel Beltran from our El Paso market!

Chef Gabe has been inspiring students as a Chef Instructor with Common Threads since February 2023, and his impact goes far beyond the recipes he teaches. From leading countless classes to bringing joy to our youngest chefs, he shows up each day with energy, kindness, and a genuine love for what he does.

He’s always the first to step in when a teammate needs support—never hesitating to lend a hand and always doing it with a smile. Even while balancing multiple commitments, Gabe remains dependable, positive, and deeply committed to our community.

We’re incredibly grateful to have him on our team. Thank you, Chef Gabe, for everything you do! Stay tuned all week as we continue to spotlight more of our standout educators!

Some stories don’t just live on pages, they come to life in our kitchens, classrooms, and communities every day.

In the spirit of World Book Day, we’re sharing a few favorite reads from our CEO that inspire the way we think about food, culture, and nutrition:

✨ Cuisine a Latina by Michelle Bernstein
✨ Korean BBQ by Bill Kim
✨ Gather & Graze by Stephanie Izard
✨ Eat to Beat Disease by William Li
✨ Food Politics by Marion Nestle
✨ The Art of Simple Food by Alice Waters

Each of these books reflects something we believe deeply at Common Threads, that food is more than fuel. It’s culture, connection, and a powerful tool for healthier futures.

This World Book Day, we’re celebrating the stories that inspire us to cook, learn, and build stronger communities. One recipe (and one page) at a time. 💚

Happy Earth Day!

Earth Day reminds us that caring for our planet starts with understanding it, and that’s exactly what our Small Bites Farm to School program brings to life with amazing partners like Zapata Academy. 💚

Students don’t just learn about food, they experience it. From visiting local farms and meeting the farmers who grow their food, to bringing that same fresh produce back into the kitchen to cook a meal together. They see the full journey from soil to plate.

This hands-on learning builds healthier habits, supports local agriculture, and connects kids to their communities and the environment in a meaningful, lasting way. Because when kids understand where food comes from, they’re more empowered to care for their health, and the Earth.

Huge thank you to Mariano’s for hosting such an incredible kickoff event for the Tastemakers Kitchen in the West Loop!

We’re so grateful to be a part of a night that brought community, food, and creativity together. All while supporting the mission of Common Threads.

Events like this help us continue empowering communities through food and nutrition education. 💛

From learning knife skills to exploring flavors from around the world, students at Don Haskins PK - 8 are building more than just meals. They’re building confidence, curiosity, and lifelong healthy habits.

For over two years, Common Threads has partnered with Official El Paso Independent School District at Don Haskins PreK–8 to deliver our Cooking Skills & World Cuisine classes. Each lesson begins with nutrition education, helping students understand how food fuels their bodies, followed by hands-on cooking that brings those lessons to life.

These classes open doors. They introduce new cultures, expand palates, and empower students with skills they carry home to their families and communities.

But programs like this don’t happen without support. To continue reaching students and schools like Don Haskins, we need partners and supporters who believe in the power of food education.

Join us in keeping these opportunities alive for the next generation. Visit https://ow.ly/zp0n50YzRnP to learn more on how you can join the mission and donate.

Our Family Cooking Class with Youthful Joy Foundation brought families into the kitchen to learn, connect, and create something special together.

With support from Dr. Hogan, families explored nutrition, built cooking skills, and shared a meal they prepared side by side. Because when the whole family is involved, the impact goes further—healthy habits are reinforced at home, confidence grows, and meaningful connections are made around the table.

This is what food education is all about: empowering not just individuals, but entire families to live healthier, more connected lives. 💚

Building healthier families starts with education and community.

On March 2, Common Threads hosted a Caregiver Workshop in partnership with La Familia del Paso, Inc a trusted organization that has supported the El Paso community since 1988 through mental and behavioral health services, primary care, and family programs.

Chef Vivian led the session with patience and enthusiasm, sharing insights on the importance of nutrition and healthy choices for families. Participants asked great questions and were excited to learn practical ways to support their family’s well-being.

Each participant also received a produce box to take home thanks to our long-standing partner Desert Spoon Food Hub and funding from GECU

We’re grateful to continue growing partnerships that bring food education and healthy resources directly to the communities we serve.

In our latest blog, Emerson Fellow Audrey Cesar reflects on her placement with Common Threads and the journey that brought her from Ohio to Miami to work on advancing nutrition access. Drawing from her own experience with food insecurity, Audrey spent her fellowship researching barriers to cooking and healthy eating for college-aged students and exploring how programming can help build confidence and food security.

Her story highlights the value of investing in emerging leaders and the power of hands-on learning within the nonprofit sector.

We are proud to work alongside fellows who bring curiosity, research, and lived experience to the mission of improving food access and health outcomes.
