✨ Meet Keifred Townsend. ✨

Keifred has been creating art since he was a young boy. An Austin native, he found Art From the Streets through word of mouth while looking for a place where he could continue doing what he loves most—creating.

Today, he's an important part of our studio community.

When asked what Art From the Streets means to him, Keifred shared something that perfectly captures who we are:
"It's good to work around other artists. They give me good advice on things I need to improve. I look at AFTS as a place where I get ideas from other artists and they get ideas from me."

His artwork often portrays people of African descent as angels, reflecting his belief in the goodness of others. He also loves incorporating dragons into his paintings, inspired by his years growing up in Bangs, Texas.

Perhaps the most powerful thing he shared was this:
"It's not only what I love to do, but it helps show me what I CAN do."

That's why Art From the Streets exists—to provide a place where artists can discover confidence, community, and opportunity through creativity.

❤️ You can help make more stories like Keifred's possible.
Become an AFTS Change Maker with a monthly gift and help provide studio space, art supplies, workshops, exhibitions, and outreach programs for artists experiencing homelessness.

Art From the Streets is watching artists grow—not just in their artwork, but in their confidence.

I'd love for you to meet Amira Yamaguchi.

When Amira joined our studio, she already knew she loved creating art. What she wasn't sure about was sharing it with others and seeing herself as a professional artist.

At AFTS, she found a community that encouraged her every step of the way.

As Amira says,
"AFTS gave me a better understanding of how to sell my artwork, grow my practice, and make creating art a career."

Today, she's come full circle. Amira now serves as an AmeriCorps VISTA with Art From the Streets, helping us improve the systems that support our artists.

Her story is a beautiful reminder that when people are given opportunity, encouragement, and community, amazing things happen. Artists don't just create beautiful work—they become leaders who give back.

Will you become a Change Maker? Your gift helps us keep our studio doors open and continue offering the creative opportunities, community, and support that help artists thrive.

Every contribution makes a difference, and we're so grateful to have you alongside us.

One of the greatest gifts is watching someone begin to see themselves in a new way.

We love for you to meet one of those artists.
Meet Jack Hurd.

Jack grew up in Memphis, Tennessee, and after life's unexpected twists, eventually made his way to Austin nearly 20 years ago. A proud veteran and father, ask Jack what his greatest accomplishment is, and he won't hesitate: "My kids are the greatest thing that's ever happened to me, and the greatest achievement of my life."

Jack discovered Art From the Streets through another veteran he met at the VA and has been creating in our studio for nearly a decade.

One of my favorite stories he shares is about the first time one of his paintings sold.

At first, Jack didn't believe someone actually wanted to buy it. He assumed they were simply being kind. When our staff explained that someone purchased his artwork because they genuinely loved it, everything changed. His response? "That was the greatest high!"

It wasn't just about selling a painting. It was the moment he realized his creativity had value. That his talent mattered. That someone connected with something he had created.

Those are the moments we witness every day.

Art From the Streets is more than a studio. It's a place where artists discover confidence, build community, and find dignity through creative expression. Every painting sold is a reminder that their work is valued—not because of charity, but because of its beauty, originality, and artistic merit.

When you become an AFTS Change Maker, you're helping provide the studio space, supplies, workshops, and exhibition opportunities that make stories like Jack's possible.

Together, we're creating art, restoring dignity, and opening doors to new possibilities.

Join us in making more moments like Jack's possible.

Welcome Nathan Seay as the 2026 Artist in Residence at Art From the Streets!

Nathan is a contemporary realist painter whose work draws inspiration from 19th-century mythological paintings, using familiar stories and everyday subjects to create a shared connection with viewers. Through masterful classical techniques, he explores humor, emotion, and the beautifully absurd—creating paintings that are both powerful and playful.

A full-time painter and resident instructor at Atelier Dojo in Austin, Nathan has studied internationally, exhibited throughout the United States and South Korea, and has been recognized with awards including the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation Grant and an Honorable Mention in the 2025 Almenara Art Prize.

Over the next five weeks, Nathan will work alongside Art From the Streets artists, sharing his knowledge, exploring new techniques, and creating in a collaborative studio environment. This residency is an opportunity for artists to learn from one another, exchange ideas, and celebrate the power of creativity to build community.

Join us as we follow Nathan's residency and share the artwork, stories, and connections that unfold along the way.
