The MHEC Gap Fund provides emergency financial assistance to birthworkers and childcare providers when life happens. But after responding to urgent needs this quarter, we don’t have enough funding to reopen for Q4 2026.

Surviving pregnancy is a human right.

We joined community organizations, birth workers, advocates, and families to organize a People’s Hearing on Friday September 25th demanding that the Maternal Mortality and Morbidity Review Committee (MMMRC) release its delayed report by Thursday, October 1, including the full 2022–2024 data.

Gathered around our alter, we heard stories, shared grief and demanded accountability.

Because behind the missing data are real people and a maternal health crisis that continues to cost lives.

The reality:
• Black pregnant Texans are 2.5–3x more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes than white Texans
• Maternal deaths have increased 56% since 2021
• Sepsis rates have increased 50%
• Infant mortality has increased 13%

We cannot make the changes families need without the full picture.

Texas DSHS The demand is clear: Release the report. Release the data. Put Texas families first.

A few weeks ago, MHEC had the opportunity to gather with community partners and key stakeholders to imagine what it could look like for Central Texas to become a perinatal safe zone—a region where pregnant and parenting people can access the care, resources, and support they need to thrive.

We’re grateful to everyone who brought their experiences, expertise, and vision to the conversation, to Bianca Flores Consulting for facilitating the convening, and to St. David's Foundation for supporting this important work.

Building safer, more responsive systems begins by bringing the right people together and, most importantly, by centering the communities those systems are meant to serve. We’re excited to continue the conversation and share more as this work develops.
