VOLUNTEERS EXTRAORDINAIRES!

We shudder to think about where we would be without the 100+ active volunteers who, this year, will contribute MORE THAN 12,000 hours to the AFB.

Each year, we recognize two with our "Outstanding Volunteer" award at our Volunteer Appreciation Event, and let me tell you, picking just two is no easy task! Held on October 1 (a gorgeous day), this year's event attracted 56 of our finest to The Red Barn for lunch and awards.

So what do these unsung heroes do for us? It would be easier to list what they DON'T do! They're produce sorters, food pick-er-uppers, KidsPak packers, appointment takers, customer service helpers, parking attendants, drivers, home delivery deliverers, shelf-stockers, building cleaners, and Board members - the list goes on and on.

This year, Cheryl Saenger and Phil Plummer were honored as our 2026 Outstanding Volunteers. Both Cheryl and Phil welcome customers to our AFB Marketplace on Wednesdays; Cheryl also answers the phone and schedules appointments on Tuesday morning, while Phil is one of our Home Delivery drivers on the 2nd Wednesday of every month.

We also recognized Board members Becky Lamey and Ben Thompson for their decade+ of service to the AFB - Becky as former President and Secretary, and Ben as Treasurer.

Without Cheryl, Phil, Becky, Ben, and all others, we couldn't come close to providing the equivalent of 1,000,000 meals every year to 2,500+ individuals every month.

Congratulations, Cheryl and Phil, and THANK YOU to all of our outstanding volunteers for your tireless contributions in helping to end hunger in our community.

UNITED BY CAUSE...MULTIPLIED BY THREE!

Every Thursday, 85-100 cars line up along Mt. Vernon Avenue between 8 a.m. - 10 a.m. for AFB's Free Food Thursday program.

On the last FFTH held in September (9/24), we were joined by two organizations that provided valuable assistance to our customers.

Kennebec Valley Humane Society was on hand, handing out pet food and supplies for dogs, cats and a few other critters.

And Central Maine Power counseled customers, providing advice and options with the onset of winter on our doorstep.

Having so many people coming through our doors provided both groups with a terrific opportunity to reach so many in such a short period of time.

Customers commented on how beneficial it was to have multiple organizations under one roof. We agree - and want to thank both KVHS and CMP for spending their morning wth us.

Last week, KV Federal Credit Union stopped by to present Augusta Food Bank staff and volunteers with a $5,000 check in support of our efforts to end hunger in our community.

The gift was part of Maine Credit Union League's Campaign to End Hunger; for the 4th consecutive year, KVFCU's employees voted the AFB to be one of the recipient of these funds.

What does $5,000 mean? It means that this gift alone will put more than 15,000 meals on the tables of those less fortunate who find themselves on the wrong side of hunger.

We are truly grateful to all of the businesses, individuals, and foundations that invest in us for the work we do. Thank you KVFCU, for your generous and continued support!

Congratulations - and THANK YOU - to Courtney Yeager - for the past ten years that she has led the United Way of Kennebec Valley.

For several years, the UWKV has been a major supporter of the AFB, and we are grateful for Courtney's leadership, collective approach, and commitment to the Kennebec Valley region.

Courtney leaves behind an incredible legacy, and we wish her continued success as she pursues her new venture! Pictured with Courtney at last night's celebration honoring her are (L-R) AFB's Bob Moore, CEO, Sandra Lind, volunteer, and Eric Lind, Board member.

Congrats to Al Cloutier for receiving the 2026 Larry LaBrie Award from the Maine Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (Maine IAAA) and the Maine Principals' Association (MPA) Thursday evening (5/21) in a ceremony held at Jeff's Catering in Brewer.

Al, who became AFB's Warehouse Manager in 2020 after a 40-year career with Central Maine Power, has dedicated more than 50 years to area youth in the Augusta and central Maine area as a baseball coach, basketball official, and his long association in leadership roles with CARA: (Capital Area Recreation Association) and Augusta Babe Ruth.

"This award recognizes Al's decades of lasting contributions to sports in the state, particularly in Augusta. The Larry LaBrie Award recognizes someone for their contributions to the (MPA's Interscholastic Division. Al has been a fixture in Augusta baseball for over 50 years as a player, Cony High School baseball coach, American Legion coach, and Babe Ruth League director."

Those attending the ceremony included members of Al's family (including his mother, Terry on his left, and his sister Lina on his right), along with good friends Steve Brooks, Mike Bechard, and Harry Lanphear.

Congratulations again, Al. Thousands of youth athletes have benefited from your lifetime of selfless dedication to them. We thank you!
