The Natural Resources Council of Maine has been protecting, conserving, and restoring Maine's environment since 1959. During the past half-century, there have been many big victories for Maine's environment thanks to the hard work and commitment of NRCM members, our staff, and our partners. Some of those successes include: the removal of the Edwards Dam on the Kennebec River in Augusta on July 1,

1999; restoration of Maine's largest river, the Penobscot; a law banning billboards on roadsides; and passage of Maine's most successful recycling program, the Maine Bottle Bill, and the list goes on. Every energy system has impacts. When you break it down, the reality is that Maine-made clean energy sources are much less damaging than coal, oil, and gas.

- Clean energy emits much less pollution over its lifecycle than fossil fuels
- Clean energy uses 50 TIMES LESS material than fossil fuels
- Clean energy has lower waste impacts

Learn more by reading our recent blog, "The Truth About the Environmental Impacts of Clean Energy."

Breaking: The Trump Administration just used $765 million in TAXPAYER dollars to pay off energy developer Invenergy to cancel four upcoming offshore wind leases, including two in the Gulf of Maine.

At a time when energy prices are rising because of our dependence on imported oil and gas we shouldn't be investing in the past. We should be investing in the energy of the future. Clean energy is more affordable, reliable, and better for the planet.

The two Gulf of Maine projects had been carefully planned out to avoid fishing grounds and minimize impact on wildlife -- the result of years of collaboration.

You can help by contacting the congressional delegation to tell them to push the Trump Administration to invest in American-made clean energy to secure our future!

All people in Maine deserve to have safe, accessible, affordable, and reliable ways to get around. A new statewide coalition, Transportation for Maine (T4ME), recently launched and calls for expanding options for Mainers to get around with a more balanced investment to connect our communities with alternatives like more reliable public transit or expanded walking and biking paths. 🚲🧑‍🦽🚐

Maine’s current transportation system leaves too many people without dependable ways to access work, healthcare, education, and community life. Non-drivers make up 30% of the population, while less than 25% of state transportation funding goes to providing people with healthier, safer, and more affordable options.

A more balanced investment in a modern transportation system will give more Mainers real options that create connected, healthy, and thriving communities. 🚌

Tune in to Maine Public at 11am today to hear NRCM's Josh Caldwell discuss this new coalition and learn more on the challenges and solutions facing Maine's transportation system.

10 years ago today, NRCM and other project partners gathered with federal, state, local, and tribal representatives to celebrate the completion of the last major milestone in the Penobscot River Restoration Project! 🐟

Completion of the project meant that for the first time in more than a century 2,000, miles of the Penobscot River were reopened to sea-run fish like American shad, river herring, and Atlantic salmon so they can access habitat upstream 🌊

The Penobscot River Restoration Project highlights how diverse interests can work together to restore the health of our rivers, revive local fisheries, and support new cultural, economic, and recreational opportunities. Dam owners, conservation groups, tribal, state, and federal agencies, and citizens worked together for 16 years to accomplish the project. 🚣

Thanks to Maine's continued investment in conservation of working lands, places like Hopes Edge Farm will now be protected forever.

One of this year’s biggest legislative wins came when a broad coalition of conservation groups including the Sportsman's Alliance of Maine, Maine Coast Heritage Trust, the Nature Conservancy of Maine and NRCM, secured a permanent funding source for the Land for Maine's Future (LMF) program. It will be the first ongoing funding source for this popular land conservation program since it was first created in 1987. 🌱

Thanks to people like you who care about the future of Maine, funding for land conservation is helping to ensure that Maine's farms, forests, waters, and wildlife remain healthy and accessible for generations to come. 🌲

Please consider donating today at nrcm.org or via link in bio to support continued investment in land conservation across all sixteen counties.

Thank you to Hope's Edge Farm and Georges River Land Trust for sharing the farm and their stories with us!

Last week, three Mainers visited Washington, DC, to meet with our federal delegation in person to talk about the importance of federal funding to protect our environment and communities.
- Bath City Councilor Jean Guzzetti,
- Lidie Robbins, Executive Director of 30 Mile River Watershed Association, and
- Riley Stevenson, a recent college graduate working on a Midcoast farm.

The group, which included our federal policy advocate Anya Fetcher, was able to meet with Senator King and representatives from the offices of Congressman Golden, Congresswoman Pingree, and Senator Collins.

In the conversations with our elected officials, Jean, Lidie, and Riley shared their voices and stories to emphasize a number of issues including:
- Impacts and costs of climate impacts on Maine municipalities, residents, businesses. 💰
- Urge them to support funding for climate adaptation, disaster relief, and coastal resilience programs. ⛈️
- Ask to hold polluters accountable for the damage they are causing. ⛽️
- Uphold and strengthen the Clean Water Act. 💧

Thank you to this amazing group of Mainers for joining Anya and to everyone who continues to speak up for the places we love!
