Climate change is making weather harder to predict. Here in Maine, that means sudden storms, extreme weather shifts, record setting temperatures, and longer allergy and tick seasons are becoming more and more common.

These environmental changes can create conditions that Mainers aren't used to, increasing the risks of weather-related illnesses and injuries.

Health can already feel unpredictable. Finding health coverage can help.

In Maine, hospitals are required by law to offer free “medically necessary” services to people with limited income. No one can be turned away from hospital emergency care regardless of income or insurance.

If your income is under a certain level, those services must be provided free of charge. Medically necessary health care includes inpatient and outpatient hospital service. This would include Emergency Room visits, Urgent Care visits, medications, labs, or physician services at any hospital and associated practices in Maine.

Free care works whether you have health insurance or not.

A single person who makes less than $31,920.00 a year or a family of four with an annual household income less than $66,000.00 can get free hospital services.

Not sure if you can trust the medical advice you got online? If it came from ChatGPT or another chat bot, Gemini, Claude, a home device like Alexa, a Google search, or an app that isn't connected to a real medical professional, you should not trust it.

To create an answer to your question, AI pulls from ALL of the information online, including old, biased, out of date, disproven, and inaccurate details. It doesn't "care" if the answer it gives is correct, because it's not a human, and it's definitely not a doctor.

AI can't diagnose a condition or suggest a treatment, but many people are sharing their personal physical and mental health details in hopes that it can. 1 in 5 said it was because they couldn't afford the cost of seeing a real provider.

Trusted health advice comes from doctors, not algorithms. If you need health coverage and want to learn your options, call our free HelpLine at 1-800-965-7476. Our local, human experts can help you get answers to your health care and coverage questions.

Wondering about your health coverage options over 65? Getting answers is easier than you think!

Many Mainers 65 and over are either eligible for Medicare or MaineCare (Maine’s Medicaid program). Some may be eligible for both!

MaineCare eligibility is based on income and assets. Finding out if you are eligible starts with calling our free HelpLine at 1-800-965-7476 to chat with a local expert. They’ll ask you questions about your income and assets to determine whether you may be eligible.

HelpLine associates are not able to assist with Medicare, but they can answer your questions about Medicare Savings Program.

Mainers can learn more about Medicare by visiting their local Area Agency on Aging. Find the nearest location here: https://www.maine.gov/dhhs/oads/get-support/older-adults-disabilities/area-agencies-on-aging
