: Student and teacher teams and workforce mentors from across Maine came together at the College of the Atlantic this summer for the Rural Energy Futures (REF) Summer Institute!

Student and teacher teams from 12 Maine schools spent three days exploring energy together through experimentation, presentations, and planning conversations about how these ideas could connect back to their own schools.

This fall, Teach ME Outside is hosting “NGSS for Maine Environmental Educators,” a free three-part virtual series for informal and environmental educators across Maine.

Across the series, participants will explore the core elements of the Next Generation Science Standards, apply NGSS to their own programs, and connect with education colleagues across in-school and out-of-school settings.

September 30 • October 7 • October 14
12–2 PM • Virtual • Free

ICYMI: What do honeybees, glaciers, and a giant split rock have in common? For 4th-grade co-teachers Anna Cosgrove and Crystal Baughman of Thomaston Grammar School, they’re all opportunities to connect science learning with the questions students are already asking about the world around them.

This fall, Maine high school educators can join MMSA for Get Energized: Clean Energy and Energy Efficiency Virtual Sessions, a three-part virtual series focused on clean energy, Maine career connections, and classroom resources.

Sessions will take place September 15, October 13, and November 10 from 3:30–5:30 PM.

Educators can attend one, two, or all three sessions. Participants will receive a $50 stipend for each individual session, or a $200 total stipend for attending all three.

This October, MMSA is offering three workshops on using games to build fluency while giving students opportunities to reason, compare approaches, and make sense of mathematical relationships.

Each workshop is designed around a specific grade band and the mathematics students are working with at that stage:

Oct. 7 | Grades 6–8 & HS Support Educators
Oct. 14 | Grades 3–5
Oct. 21 | Grades K–2

Lewiston, ME | $250 per workshop

From early number sense and operations to fractions, rational numbers, proportional relationships, and linear functions, participants will work with games and representations they can adapt for their own students.

The 2026 CBEL+ Census is now open!

Do you teach in a classroom, lead a school or organization, work with young children, or create learning experiences outside of school in Maine? We want to hear from you.

The CBEL+ Census looks at environmental and outdoor learning happening across the state. Whether learning happens indoors or outdoors, your experience belongs in the statewide picture. Every response helps us better understand what is happening across Maine and helps guide future funding, professional learning, partnerships, and statewide priorities.

We have some exciting news! 🎉 MMSA has been awarded a planning grant through the National Science Foundation (NSF) FINDERS FOUNDRY program.

Led by MMSA’s Ian Collins, AI STEM Education Specialist, and Rachael Dektor, CS Education Researcher, the project will explore an AI-powered tool designed to help educators bring computer science into English Language Arts classrooms.

Computer science is showing up in Maine classrooms in places you might not expect.

At this year’s CS Summer of Fun, more than 215 Maine educators explored how computer science and AI can connect with everything from theater and science to conservation, 3D design and hands-on, screen-free learning.

Educators like Hannah Kibbin of Winthrop Middle School are bringing computer science into classrooms in new ways, with this year’s participants expected to reach nearly 50,000 Maine students.
